Thanks for that! I kinda figured that it would work, but surprised that a hair dryer was enough heat. I guess that the plastic is softer than I thought.
That's an old installers' trick. When we would bend some ABS plastic for installs you would get the same whitening, and a heat gun fixed it right up.

 

I put these in - but would've preferred wood ( was late, so I went with what I had).

These are VERY thin and flimsy. Not ideal for something that's going to move a lot (bass).

That said, they're easy to install and use...

 

That was nice work. But the reason it heats so easily is that it's thin and easy to overheat so be careful.

BTW, the marking on the plastic is PP/PE which is polypropylene/polyethylene. It's not hard to melt and nearly impossible to get a structural glue joint to work with products available to the consumer.

 

I guess that there is a solvent-based adhesive that would work to "weld" this material.
I know that I've seen dealers do a repair of a hole or cigarette burn in this type of plastic using a mini "iron" and filler along with a textured "graining" sheet.
Sort of like one would do with a vinyl repair kit.
Plastics are soooo much fun.....

wait, you want to connect your bazooka to the wires connecting to your door speakers?

You def do not want to do that, you will want an amp for that sub. you will need rca cables & remote turn on cable to your head dead, and then power to the battery and ground it anywhere on the chassis. then connect speaker wire from amp to sub

 

I thought Bazooka subs were self powered...

 

You still need power to them, it wont be as easy as cutting into the wiring. If you put a new head unit, the ghetto way would be to get the wiring hooked up at the head unit level and not at the door.

 

Newbie question - front speaker looks like 6x9"; why do people install 6.5" speaker in that spot? Crutchfield seems to list only 6.5" or smaller sizes for front opening; any idea why 6x9" speaker is not listed?

I think it's because the weird Toyota plastic 6x9's use non-standard mounting holes, even for a 6x9. And the adapter brackets from Crutchfield are for putting 6.5" in the factory opening.

 

eeeeks I cringed when I saw MDF going in a door in a car.. dip that MDF in water for 1 second and let me know what you have....
not a good material for a car door...

 

I'm hoping that the peel-and-seal he used will keep the water away. I might have coated it with at least some poly-resin, or made a thick fiberglass adapter panel, and used screws with nylocs to mount the speakers.
