^Haha ok. It's not that I don't believe that can happen, I just haven't seen it. My neighbors have '04 Priuses and no peeling or yellowing yet. Their headlights look as new as mine. Do you have any pictures of some bad ones?
Are your neighbors cars left outside in the Sun? The more exposure Plastic headlights have the sooner this issue happens. My cars are not garaged and I first experienced this issue on a 2001 Honda Insight, now on our 2006 and 2007 Prius cars. The lens can be polished to remove the surface flaking. However the flaking is the UV coating that protects the polycarbonate lens from becoming a creamy white color and getting brittle.
This peeling happened on my '03 Mustang and I finally replaced them. They looked awful...I can post a pic tomorrow if you really want to see it (still haven't tossed them out yet).
Update: I still have yet to visit the dealership again to finally get this headlight replaced because I'm a little apprehensive. Will the headlight bulbs match color? Will this "cosmetic" repair change the condition of my vehicle (ie it's resale value)? Is it overall worth it? You've seen the picture. As the dealership even said, it's not going to get any better... Thanks all for the help.
1. I doubt that the headlight bulb will be replaced. More likely the old bulb will be installed in the new headlight housing. 2. Your car's resale value will not be diminished by this repair. 3. Since you aren't paying for the warranty repair, I would say that it makes sense to replace the headlight housing now. If you had to pay, then I would advise waiting until the problem got worse.
I agree with everything Patrick said. The only trepidation on my part is what condition is the other lamp in? If the other lamp is yellowed or pitted at all then the nice bright new lamp on one side may make it stand out somewhat. As time goes on they may age differently as well making one side look brighter and newer than the other. Since its pretty new as it is though its probably not an issue.
Thanks Steve. Exactly what you said, its pretty new - the other lamp is in fine condition -garaged and all most of its life.
Done. New headlight is in. It's so smooth and clean, I plan to eat dinner off it. And to celebrate, check out what 'cho boy just got. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/HUGE...erchandise&hash=item5196b45163#ht_2300wt_1167
Congrats! Both on the new headlight and the new place to eat dinner! The beanie cap...do not know about that
Dinner was less than spectacular. My food kept sliding off the headlight and landing on my front bumper. I need a new beanie because my current one is as old as Meg's (Family Guy). I've actually had my eye on that white TRD beanie for months...
