I remember very clearly when I first saw the HUMMER years ago in a car show, the MPG's were NOT posted on the sticker. When I asked, the reps said that they dont need to post MPG's on a vehicle that weighs over 6,000 lbs. (6,000 i think, not sure) I acknowledged that, but when I pushed harder, they told me that the MPG is probably about 6 city, 8 highway. seriously, 6/8.

So whenever I see a driver behind a hummer, just imagine the gas they're consuming and the money they're spending. Hate becomes pity. So to say........

 

I know Jeep owners do this... and I actually thought about this when I pulled up next to another 09' Prius this morning. Wondered if it would be weird to start it. LOL

I try to keep my opinions to myself as I live in an area where ALL of my friends own domestic trucks and SUV's and some of their family own Hummer's, even the soccer moms, and it would cause trouble.

But yes to put it simply. I just can't imagine why somebody would be so wasteful.

6 MPG... ansolutely absurd!

 

6mpg is stupid and environmentally wreckless, most especially when there are some non-hybrid mid size SUV's and some full size SUV's that get in the mid-20's if you're REALLY hurting for space (kids, job that requires toting stuff, etc)....

We were in the Toyota dealership and there was a mid size SUV touting 22MPG.. Hubby and I laughed as we were signing the papers to our Prius. LOL

There is a calculation somewhere, I'll look for it, that shows the progression of Technology and how the standard non-hybrid cars is as if technology has virtually stood still for more than three decades where as phones, computers, water heaters, toilets, thermostats, HVAC units, light bulbs... you name it, have progressed to the times... but the car is DECADES behind the techno-progress of our nation. Crazy, huh?

 

If you own a gas guzzler, the most sensible thing to do is to buy oil stock. When gas prices go up, your stock price goes up, and so do your dividends. It more than pays for gas price increases.

I remember in the early 80s when I owned a BMW 320i, Bimmer drivers used to flash their lights when passing one another on the road. That's when these cars were hot items. Don't know if they do that now.

This thread is freakin hilarious. I've tried to make eye contact w/ other Prius owners as I see them, wanting them to be looking back, and hoping to see a "hey, look, another prius" look on thier face. Nothing so far. Also I was beginning to think i was a freakin tool for expecting it. If I am, at least I'm not alone
So this thought and now reading about "the prius wave" has me literally laughing out loud.

Try owning an FJ cruiser. They are not to common but it seems like half of them wave.

Similiar to Corvettes, we MX-5 (Miata) owners also observe "waving" as part of our rituals. Of course, we have the advantage of driving with our tops down so the wave is obvious. If our tops are up we just "flash" our headlights in recognition of each other. OTOH, the MX-5 has approximately only 800,000 cars since its inception in 1989.

 

My "Prius Wave" attempt ended badly.

I was stopped at an intersection and saw a Blizzard Pearl across the road from me. When the light changed and we started through the intersection, I waved and she immediately, without even a half-second pause, gave me the finger as our cars passed. I shrugged it off until a few blocks later when I see headlights flashing and a horn...my Blizzard Pearl twin had turned around and raced to catch up with me. The woman put her window down screamed and cursed at me at the next red light; when it turned green, she pulled a U-turn and I guess went back to where she was originally headed. I truly don't know what I did wrong and can't imagine getting that angry over someone waving at me...heck, I'm usually smiling, relaxed and chilled out when I'm driving my Prius, even with the rednecks tailgating me!

Every time I see another Prius on the road I use the Hawaiian "Hang Loose" sign.

I think both wave because the cars are (or where) unusual.

It happens in a bunch of different vehicles. Jeep Wranglers (CJ's etc) wave at each other, not so much for any other Jeep products. I am sure there are many others. Volvo, BMW, Mercedes (except G wagon) tend not to wave.
