Goodyear Assurance Fuel-Max Tires

    Fuel economy is influenced quite a bit by tires and the Gen-III is getting old enough that owners are now in search of replacements better than the factory type.

    Michelin Energy Saver A/S is mentioned often by Gen-II owners, many with praise for that particular LRR (Low Rolling Resistence). It looked compelling to me too, but that wasn't what I ended up getting.


    Goodyear Assurance Fuel-Max was what I decided on for my 2010. Here's the specs:
    • 195 / 65 R15
    • 51 PSI maximum
    • 1279 lbs. load maximum
    • Low Rolling Resistance
    • 836 Revs per mile
    • 10/32 in. Tread-Depth
    • 89H Speed & Load Rating
    • "A" Traction
    • "A" Temperature
    • 580 Treadwear
    • 65,000 Mile Warranty
    The price I paid for the tires, installation, and disposal of the old ones was $489.79 (including tax).

    My experience with them so far (about 1,400 miles) has been quite pleasing. With most of the weather still winter and similar to just prior to getting the tires, I've observed a tiny increase in MPG. Noticing an efficiency gain before break-in being complete is a big deal. Gotta like that. We got a bad snow & ice storm the other day too. Traction was great.

    In short, I'm happy to endorse this as another choice of tire available. It's worked out really well so far. I can't wait for the warm weather to finally arrive...

    I have the Walmart version on my Gen II: Goodyear Viva Authority Fuel Max P185/65R15

    I like them.

    I recently put on the Goodyear Assurance Fuel max tires as well. Very satisfied with the ride, handling, and low rolling resistance.

    My friend at work just got a new 2011 Prius II and her car came with the Goodyear Assurance tires on it. Are they the same tire as the fuel max that people are talking about in this thread?

    I don't believe Toyota would install anything other than LRR tires on a new Prius? If they are Fuel Max. then I believe they are LRR. Hal

    I bought my 2010 Prius last June. It came with the Goodyear Assurance Fuel Max tires.
    At first I did not like them,. Then I inflated them to 38 psi back and 40 psi front. Now I think they are dandy. They handle very nicely.

    Hi Jimbo,
    In another thread you said something like your tires were "just OK". I think you've put quite a few miles on them since then. Now you say you "like them". Have you upgraded you opinion, or are the two statements equivalent? How's the handling? Are they as loose feeling as the Integritys? Do they handle better with more air pressure? If so, do you just raise the air pressure until the NHV (noise, harsness, vibration) is no longer tolerable and back off a bit? What pressure did you settle on?

    Doesn't 51 PSI vibrate and rattle you car apart? Or are you blessed with excellent roads?

    For my use, they are just fine, I like them. Where I am, I have no way to judge how they would be in rain or snow, so I try not to over promise for those who need to cope with weather. I run 42 in front and 40 in back, as I never trust a tire gauge. I load my car pretty heavy, so it does not feel rough. The roads here are level and straight, so handling is hard to judge.

    When I hit old warn pavement or bad roads I lower the pressure down to 40 lbs.

    Makes my 44 PSI seem squishy. Of course, with 115 PSI in the tires of my bike, there's simply no comparsion.

    I have Michelin Energy Saver tires on our Prius. I have
    44 psi of Costco Nitrogen in all four tires, that is the
    max sidewall psi.

    Have over 35,000 miles on them now and they are really
    great. Same size as the orginal Yoko Avid tires that
    we replaced, 195x65x15 inch.

    MPG's increased 2-3 mpg over the stock Avid.

    Looks like I will get at least 55-60,000 miles our of these
    Michelin's.

    I am thinking about Nitrogen for my Prius' tires as well. How frequently did you find yourself having to take them back for Nitrogen replenishment? Or does it just stay at the same pressure until you replace the tires or there is a puncture? Thanks.

    I rotate every 5,000 miles at Costco. When
    they rotate I advise them to check tire
    pressure and fill to 44 psi in each tire.

    Normally they are down 2-3 psi in each tire.
