Greetings -- I have a white 2009 Prius, and while washing my car the other day, I noticed some rather large areas of bare metal just below the driver's side passenger door. I took a closer look, and i could actually keep chipping paint off with my fingernail. I went to the other side of the car, and same deal below that rear door. This is exceedingly odd -- there's no way to hit debris on this part of the car, and it also seems very unlikely that rear passengers were able to remove paint like this. My apologies if this has been discussed here before -- I just spent some time searching, and the volume of information is a bit overwhelming. I'm hoping that someone has maybe heard of a problem similar to mine. I'm going to try to get some pictures soon and add them here. Thanks so much for any information!
Did you buy it new? Was it involved in any accident that would require repainting in those areas? I can only recommend painting it as soon as possible to avoid rusting. I would sand it all down, prime it and use a chip guard or undercoating spray before applying paint.
I have also had this problem. A while back the paint on my 2007 Prius front bumper began peeling in various places, I guess it could be rock damage but I've seen a lot of Prius and they don't have the same thing. Last week one of those big chunks of truck tire on the freeway hit my bumper and a huge piece of the paint just flaked off. It looks horrible, and I have no idea what to do about it.
For about $50 you can buy a custom matched spray can of paint from paintscratch.com - you could give it a try. I bought a touch-up tube from them and was very happy.
I have a white 2010 prius. I noticed in the fall that there was paint peeling and/or flaking on the passenger side A-pillar. I got it repainted this spring. Yesterday, my wife took our prius to the car wash and now our prius has peeling/flaking on the rear driver side quarter panel. I have no idea why this is happening because I have never seen paint actually flake from the bare metal.
