We are thinking about getting the Prius IV 2011. I've been trying to do some research, particularly on how often and how much it costs to replace the battery when needed. Someone on yahoo answers said the prius IV 2011 will NEVER need the battery replaced, ever. I couldn't find anything about this on google. Is this true?
:welcome: close to never. it is quite rare. how many years do you plan to keep it? many here have 04's with well over 100,000 miles and the batteries are just fine.
GO FOR IT! Battery replacements are very rare indeed, and, in the unlikely event that you may actually need it, there are a number of people repairing and/or salvaging used batteries out there. If you investigate a little, you'll find that Prii are very reliable cars!!!! Oh, yes you will love it.... especially when you go 400+ miles on 9 gallons of gasoline!

I remember reading a thread here talking about Prius cabs that had over 250,000 miles with zero battery issues. It's the first thing that concerns non-Prius owners about buying one but it's a non-issue.
The hybrid battery concern has always been a perception, but the reality is that it's never been a problem. My S-I-L bought her Prius 10 years ago and the hybrid battery continues to perform perfect. Actually, she's NEVER had any serious problems with her Prius. She's only got 80,000 miles, but age is as critical as miles.
I bought a Prius 4 on Sunday. It rides smootha and nice. I love the leather and heated seats. 49MPG on first fill up. You will love it.
If you live in one of the CARB state, the HV battery warranty is 10 years or 150,000 miles. We know the HV battery can last more than 333k miles.
OP: What state are you in? If you're not in a CARB state, the HV battery is still warranted for 8 years/100K miles. From CTV British Columbia - Hybrids prove very reliable - CTV News, we know that the HV battery can last 434K miles.
Any rechargeable battery will degrade over time. There are many factors which can affect how long it will last such as the number of charge/discharge cycles, the temperature etc. Take any anecdote at its face value and there are plenty on this site of both battery failures and long lasting ones. One thing you will notice is the incessant claim of the latter. Even in this thread, most of the responses claim as such ..... but if you look at how long these posters have driven the Prius, NONE of them have driven their current Prius for longer than 6 years.
And keep in mind the guys quoted above doesn't own a Prius but he spends his time on a Prius forum slandering anything Prius. 128,000+ miles with no repairs minus a few tail light bulbs. Still another 22,000 miles worth of hybrid warranty left. It's been a great car for me and I'd do it all over again in a heartbeat.
Typical. Notice the unsubstantiated attack. A mere 6 years do not count as a long term experience. I think 10 years is the time when things start breaking in most Toyota's or Honda's.
Your continued presence here is enough provocation for an attack. Fortunately all I did state a fact. I guess you could go domestic and expect parts breaking sooner....

He doesn't own a Prius and all he does is waste his own time and that of others (who chime in to set the record straight). It seems he has a vested interest in seeing Toyota and/or the Prius fail or dissuading people from buying Priuses. Automotive grade HV battery is not ANY rechargeable battery. It has been proven to be a single most reliable part in the Prius. It is also backed by 10 years / 150k miles warranty. To simply put it, it is more reliable than ANY part in your Accord.
I have heard nothing but good things from long-time Prius owners. Being a new owner myself, that was one of the questions I had before considering one. But with so many owners with WELL OVER 100K miles on their cars with no battery problems (I'm sure there will be the rogue issue, but who would expect perfection?), I'm confident that I have purchased a good vehicle. If I end up spending around $1k for a new battery pack with high mileage on my vehicle, I would consider that a cheap investment compared to putting a rebuilt engine in a used car (which I have done).
See bold text. His SIL has a 10 year old Prius. There are a handful of Gen I Prius taxis in Vancouver/Victoria, Canada. And also note that the pack was upgraded with the Gen 2 so they should last longer than the Gen 1s with better cooling.
