I always check the poster's location, and 9 times out of 10 the 55mpg+'ers are from flat(er) southern (warm) states. Few deep cold startups, probably no snow tires, less climbing mountains, maybe better gas (no winter-blend necessary).

When we had a week of 35+ degree days my MPG went up noticeable, with trips in the 50's, and per tank averages up over 40 finally.

I'm looking forward to summer temps and getting the heavy snow tires off, though I'll never be able to, or really want to, flatten the terrain. ;)

Well, I'm getting nearly 60 MPG (52 winter, nearly 70 summer), and I'm in MA (not as chilly or hilly as VT, but still....). I don't even have a 2010, so I have to top out my P&G at 41 instead of 46 MPH like you lucky dogs over here.

Main issue looks like length and speed of commute to me.

I drive 26 mi each way on a road with 35-40 MPH speed limits, which allows a lot of P&G driving, Hills seem not to hurt so long as there aren't stop signs at the bottom.

Averaging around 51-52 MPG, easily here in the Sunshine State.

I'm rural highway (65-70mph) and lots of up and down. 50 miles round trip, generally. I read about people "staying out of the power" part of the HSI bar and have envy. I couldn't get out of my town without getting into that power bar, let alone maintain highway speed on some of the hills. The topography just won't allow it.

My MPG goes up when I spend a lot of time bopping around one town/area but up here, you go town to town a lot (home, work, shopping, dinner, etc are often an exit or 3 apart on I-91 or I-89). Almost no real "traffic" so P&G is a toughie.

I still think I'll get 50 easily this summer. When we get a few days above freezing I get up in the 40's no problem. :)

To be clear, I'm not complaining, the near-40 I'm getting now totally jibes with everything I've read (snow tires, 10% ethanol gas, sub-zero mornings) and is a whole lot better then the 16mpg I got with my last vehicle. :)

My buddy has a GenII and lives in Portsmouth, NH and he gets 50 in the winter, 60 in summer. But he runs the LLR tires year round and it is WAY flatter down that way then up here.

I did 53 mpg (calculated) on my last tank. That is the best I have done so far, although I have only owned my 2010 Prius for aapproximately two months.

Yes, I'm in the sunshine state...

It's been a week so far with my 2010 Prius here in NYC. Averaging about 47ish so far on my second tank, hoping to see 50s soon. I can't complain though, the Prius gives me triple the mpg compared to my last car.

Everyone else isn't getting 58 -- just those who are excited enough to post it!

I'll need to update my signature a bit -- to show my current status. I'm now over 35,000 miles, so I think I have enough tanks of gas, seasons and oil changes to get an idea of the kind of MPGs I'll get when driving my car. Now that I've had two winters, two summers, two falls and one spring, I've seen my mileage drop and stabilize. Overall, I'm still above 50, and the extremes seem to be upper 50s/lower 60s in the spring/fall months, mid-50s in the summer (AC is nice!) and mid- to upper-40s in the winter months.

Each car and driver will be different. I'll have better MPGs than someone who always has two or three other people in the car, but I'll have worse MPGs than someone who has a regular commute of 20 miles each way. I'll have better MPGs than those who drive 75mph regularly, but I'll have lower MPGs than someone who doesn't have the 17" wheels and low-profile tires that are on my Prius V.

You are in northern Illinois in the middle of winter. Cold weather, snow, wet roads and constant braking are all going to take a significant toll on gas mileage. Sporin's got this right:

Remember that he's where it is really chilly and he has a hill or two to deal with. The dips in Washington St. don't compare to a mountain. You'll do great when the weather warms up.

    I like this style:

    That's it!

Bought my 2010 Prius in December.

    1st tank - 46.7 MPG
    2nd tank - 51.7 MPG
    3rd tank - 52.8 MPG (so far)

I may be peaking in my mileage though, because I just put on a hitch and bike rack, and it will be getting warm here soon, so I may have to use the AC.

    I love this car.

My previous car was a Subaru Forester - not very reliable and only 21 MPG.

I have had my Prius for 4 days and am averaging 44MPG. I have read this will improve as the engine and everything else is fully broken in. It's also 32 degrees or so when I am driving. It's odd to think that I now find getting 40MPG low as compared to getting 24MPG in my previous vehicle.

I have 51,000 miles on my 2010 Prius purchased at the end of June 2009.

Lifetime per the computer is 50.8 In the summer I get 53 to 55 mpg per tank of gas. I don't use air conditioning unless wife is in the car. In the winter I get horrible mileage ranging from 38 to 44 mpg but I have seat heaters on and heat turned way up. Yeah I am an incubater baby living outside chicago. The mileage is better than I got in my min van but I still complain in the winter. I have kept a log book since I puirchased with every fill up mileage price per gallons and gallons. One day I will put in a spreadsheet.

Approaching the end of Winter, and on generally hilly trips I am now averaging 4.2 l/100 Km (56 miles/gallons US). On flat trips I can get 3.8 l/100 (61.8). All trips are closed circuits (back and from) and are over 100 Km.

End of official winter here so I changed back to summer tires. My FE on winter tires (215/45/17) is 5,7 l/100km. Total distance covered is 4.898 km, lower grill blocked. My daily commute is kind of non optimal for prius: 5 km one way on cold mornings and 20 km back to the home (asymetrical round trip).

With the warmer weather (high 30's - low 50's) here my average has been climbing finally. Another 2 weeks or so and I'll ditch the snow tires and I expect that to make a big difference.

Set a personal best on my daily work commute today (about 26 miles, 1/2 of which are country highway miles--55 MPH posted). Old personal best was 64.4 MPG and with today finally breaking 60 degrees, I easily passed it: 71.2 MPG!!

I was very excited to break 70.0 and I didn't even try any specific P&G methods..just tried to keep my instant MPG reading topped off. With warmer weather quickly approaching, 80 MPG is now the new goal! :)

Grats! :) I really need a GenIII. The extra power would allow me to continue driving 65mph but get much better mpg.

Mild temps 30 to 80F. Cold last two days. 100% ECO Mode. Two rainy days. No ethanol. Cheated with engine block heater in the morning. Removed the lower grill block. Not much heater/AC usage.

This was my best tank so far.

My first tank on the car had 515 miles, filled the tank with almost 8.9 gallons of gas for an estimated 57.7MPG. I forgot to check what the computer calculated.
