So, I drive ~122 miles a day to/from work...round trip. I've just wrapped up my first work week with the Prius and here's my best MPG so far. EDIT: I actually did a little better today averaging 48 and change MPG. This is the one I took a picture of though from yesterday. This is with me cruising at around 65-70, tires inflated to 44 psi, cruise control set for all but the first and last few minutes of the trip.
Has RI warmed up yet ? We are in the 60s F during the day now, and my in-town MPG is creeping back up to 70 mpg like I am used to in spring and autumn.
It will go up in the spring and summer. When I make my annual trip to Maine in the summer, I usually get between 51 and 56 mpg. If your tire pressure is set to 44 PSI, drop the rear tires to 42. There shoud be a 2 psi differential between front and rear.
I should just cut and paste the reply I just gave someone else here..... 47 mpg for a Newbie in Winter is great!! Just think what you can do in Summer when it's nice out, and you have honed your technique. Post an update on July 4th, meebee 50+ ??? ATC huh? ... COOL!!!
Did this yesterday driving around for about 45 mins running errands. Town roads speeds ~45 or less. Using P&G technique I learned here
Nice, great job so far! The blank spot is a good sign - you were parked but didn't shut off, right? I do that when picking up kids, etc., as long as it doesn't stretch on too long. The commute display looks a lot like my long highway runs at those speeds. If you can tolerate losing a few minutes drive time, 60mph will probably get you over the 50mpg mark. I adjust my speed according to what my GPS gives for an ETA and when I have to be there. 60mph vs 65mph over a 60-70 mile drive just isn't much time diff. I also find that I get in the way LESS at 60mph around here. I don't have to overtake truckers and the speeders just go by on the left. At 65-70 I have to pass trucks and still stay out of the way of the 70-75 crowd. - D
Thanks Don. Yeah the blank spot is me in park for a bit. I read somewhere that for periods less than ten minutes to just leave the car on. Its interesting to read the comments you wrote about different speeds on the highway. I've had to totally rethink my commute now that I'm being more fuel concious. I definately was in the 80 mph + club before I got my Prius. At 65 I'm being passed by almost everyone lol. The speed limits on I95, or any interstate around here for that matter, seem to be advisory in nature. I think part of the Prius' fuel economy is that it tells you, in real time, what you're spending on gas based on how fast you're driving. I'd bet we'd see better MPGs out of everyone if all cars had a similar display. Probably lower speeds too.
