While I completely agree with what was written about distracted driving, I'm always perplexed when someone feels the need to slam an entire thread. Wouldn't your time be better spent reading and contributing to something you care about?

Yes I STRONGLY care about some techno distracted knucklehead running into me, my wife, my friends or pretty much anybody else I share the road with!

Much of this thread isn't about using gadgets while you're driving. I find it offensive when someone offhandedly trashes an entire thread/forum. Labeling it 'frivolous' indicates it is inconsequential and presumably, a waste of your time.

This ENTIRE thread is how to stick a IPUD in front of your face so you can see it when you drive. If it's OFF...no problem, the second you turn it on.....that's the problem.
I get really offended when stupid people kill somebody just because they refuse to take personal responsibility and JUST DRIVE THE DAMN CAR!
    If your offended......T.S.!!!

At least 3/4 of the posts here, including the original post, are in no way related to using an iPad inside of a vehicle, much less while driving.

I just got an iPad this week and I found that it does fit in the lower glove box of a Gen III Prius.
It can fit in the center console if you remove both the tray and the cupholder, but the cover doesn't close 100%. I suppose someone could mod either the lid or the floor of the console to give an extra inch or so clearance so the armrest lid would click all the way closed.
The glove box is good enough for me and no modifications are needed. The console would be nice so it could be plugged into the aux jack and power port and stay hidden, but with 10+ hour battery life and A2DP streaming, I can live without that.

I thought of a way to mount the iPad if I wanted to use it for navigation or for audio instead of using the radio.

Get a silicone sleeve case you don't mind damaging, add industrial strength black Velcro to the back of the iPad so it lines up with the radio knobs and then add Velcro to the radio knobs. Turn the iPad into landscape orientation and line up Velcro and it should be enough to hold it securely if you aren't taking your Prius off-roading. Play the audio using A2DP from either the Toyota bluetooth accessory kit or the factory nav or a Blackberry Music Gateway and you can hear the iPad music and navigation voice over the stereo speakers with no cables dangling. Use the steering wheel controls to adjust the volume.
When you want to take the iPad out with you or put it away, just pop it off and there will be no noticeable mounting hardware is showing.

I wonder if there are replacement radio knobs available if the Velcro adhesive messes up the knobs when you are ready to remove the Velcro or do you have to get a whole new nav system?

The downside to this if you have nav is that you need to unmount the iPad if you are planning to use the backup camera.
I have found Navigon for the iPad to be a better navigation system than the factory nav except for one big item. No speech recognition to enter addresses. I would not be surprised if this comes in a future update. I know this is possible because Google Nav for Android has speech recognition that works great.
An iPad, and Navigon software doesn't cost much more than 2 map updates for the factory nav and you can add real-time traffic for a one time $20 fee instead of recurring fees for XM traffic.
