Ok, so im at half a tank and when i tried filling it up, the damn thing kept on clicking....Does this mean something? Is my flexiable bladder messing up Whenever i turned off my car, i sat in it for about 3 mins....I read that if you do this, i shouldnt have any problems filling up help plz thanx
Burn some more gas, fill at 1, 2 pips, your call. Fill till it clicks, that should be about 8 gal so. Position of nozzle is also important. When I fill I wait till first click, then lift nozzle pump some more, usually about 1 gal more. Just don't ovefill. That trashes the cabon vapor recovery cannister. Thats bad Egon. At least that's how a '08 takes gas. 8 gal = 400 miles...SWEET!
I suggest that you keep track of your fuel consumption by using the MFD mpg and trip odometer readouts. If you know that the car consumed 6 gallons, then pump 6 gallons before you are done, and don't worry about the fact that the pump is clicking off.
Ok thanks for the advice guys...ill just wait until I'm down 2 pips or so... Everytime it goes down to 4 pips...it always takes like about 4-6 gallons
I this same type of issue with another vehicle trying to fill the tank, where the nozzle kept clicking the pump off. So it's not confined to just the U.S. Prius.
I find on some super-sensitive gas pumps you have to pull the gas lever just slightly to get a small stream to fill it up.
Fill the tank at the slowest setting on the pump....fill it slowly. You can also remove the pump handle (at about mid fill) ...from your car for 15 seconds or so, .....so that air can be released from the tank.....Then continue to finished filling the tank....slowly. When it's colder (about freezing and below), the tank bladder stiffens up, and won't expand fully....so it's harder to get filled. Toyota has made some changes in the tank to fix some of the problems in the 04 to 09 tanks. I had to change out a tank in an 08 and found out the earlier tanks were different.
It's a bad idea to sit in the car after starting the pump. Lol...I didn't do that...I sat in the car for 3 mins to let it the fumes breath out of the tank...then I got out of my car, got the gas pump and started pumping the gas
OP - I do not know how long you have had the car or your location so I just thought that I would mention that this is a far bigger issue in the cold. Once the weather warms up the tank is far more accommodating so just another reason to look forward to summer.
Here they let us pump the gas, but they remove the clip that lets you hold the pump open... you have to hold it throughout the transfer. Maybe there's another reason NJ doesn't let you pump gas... big political donations from the pump jockey unions?
i had the same problem i just bought a 2009 used prius i started to fill the tank and the pump shut off i had to put gas in slowly. after i got 8 gal in i pulled the handle out and gas shot out all over me and the car and it keep bubbling in the fill tube. and the temp. was about 65 degrees out side.
