I hope this is not a repeat question somewhere, but could you tell me if the info on the displays are metric or imperial? temp, mpg, speed stuff like that. I know there is a button that switches the speed from km to mph, but does it switch all the other stuff mentioned above as well? I've seen both displays in pic on this site, just wondering how its done, and is it switchable, back & forth.
For the US-spec cars all the Mi/Km switch affects is the speedometer. I think the units for the other indicators are predetermined by intended destination, so European/Japanese/Canadian cars would have metric units. I have not heard of any cars where all the units are configurable.
Or you could ask your local dealer. From everything that I've read on the blog, the both the settings U.S. Miles/Gallons or Kilometers/liters, are all in Metric, and not Imperial. That said, as previsiously discussed in this thread, it is a factor determined by the region that the vehicle is intended for. I would imagine that if you were to search Toyota's website for your region, your answers will be in fine print in the vehicle specs. (as it would be in a printed brochure from a dealer). Please let the Prius Community know if you find something else to this.
I have a Canadian prius. The only thing switchable is the speedo. It sucks cause I hate using liters per 100kms. I want MPG! Why do car companies suck so badly when it comes to UI and software. In the age of smart phones you would think our car UI's would be pretty awesome. But no, they're stuck in 1995.
No. Assuming you have a Canadian spec car, and not one imported from the US, then all units are stated in metric. For those times you drive South of the border, the speedometer display can be switched to mph. As far as I know, the odometer is not affected. Note to Kev: Who's stuck in 1995? The only countries still not officially using metric are the US and Liberia.
I would have assumed you'd be able to tell by the values show in the displays. Big difference between metric and imperial values, no?
Well if I had my vehicle I could just walk out to the car and try it myself......however, since I don't, I pose the question. By the replies I read, it sounds like its all metric except the km/MPH button. Its all good, I can do a little conversion chart for the liters vs imperial gallons and find out what mileage I'm getting. Its only the MPG I was concerned about, I don't mind the metric temp etc. thanks for all the replies and help everyone.....
Switch your BRAIN to l/100 km. It's a nice mileage indicator. Here's a hint on what it means: 4 l/100 km is PHENOMENAL mileage - 70 mpg imp. 4.5 is still very good at 62 mpg imp. 5 is the worst you should get in summer at 56.5 mpg imp. 5.5 is not so good at 51 mpg imp. 6 is winter mileage for a Prius at 47 mpg imp. 6.5 is poor winter mileage at 43.5 mpg imp. 7 is caused by lots of idling at 40 mpg imp.
hey, thanks David, that's great to have. Anything possible below 4? I thought I ready somewhere about 3.8 in city.....or something like that? My mother gets between 5.6 and 6 with her 2009 Corolla, I though that was decent.
Just picked up a 'new to me Prius' and was wondering about this. My brain seems to work in the grey area of both (learnt imperial system early and then Canada switched to metric), but not 100% living in either. This reference information is fantastic! Thanks
Looks like I missed the post after mine. The Canadian Govt. uses what amounts to the old EPA method to calculate mileage (actually the Govt. doesn't do the calculation/measuring - they just require the importer to do it in a specific way). So mileage numbers in Canada are ridiculously high. Yes, it's -possible- to get 3.8 l/100 km. No, you won't see it! Unless you're always going downhill. The newer EPA method the US uses actually results in mileages you can get! Shocking!!
There are apps available that will help convert metric into US gal. and vis-versa. I down loaded a app and find it very helpful. I just cannot get my head around 4.1 liters per 100 kilometers. That is one thing Honda has over on a Prius is when you change from Metric or Mpg they change every thing. Not like prius who only change the speedo. H
