You know, lots of people make purchasing decisions with which we wouldn't agree.

If you think the Prius is such a bad idea, don't buy one. I'd have to agree with Wildkow; if the HV battery is the weak point, I'm feeling even better about my purchase.

I'm sure there are folks who tell you that a radio-controlled electrically-powered floating snack tray (so you can ferry snacks out to those famished people resting on their floating pool furniture) is a good idea...

Did you check your 12-volt battery? If it is flat, the main battery has to give it a little boost to start the engine and does not like it...
If you do need a HV replacement, I would try eBay or an outfit that sells re-built/re-manufactured products. Google "Adopt A Part".

At parts.com, you can buy a new battery for 2nd gen Prius for $2083.88

I figure that the $200 bounty paid by Toyota for the old one would cover shipping.

And, anyone reasonably handy (and smart enough to do it safely) could replace the battery his/herself.

This suggests to me that having the main battery die would be cheaper and easier to deal with than having to get a rebuilt transmission.

 

Yes, a transaxle replacement is probably the most difficult and costly Prius powertrain repair task (since a gasoline engine failure is highly unlikely if regular engine oil/oil filter changes are observed.)

 

As far as I know, no one rebuilds Prius transaxles, as it is just not cost effective. Also, as far as I know, no one gets $200 directly from Toyota for returning an HV battery core. The $200 is paid to dealers who accept your core to cover their costs for arranging its return. If anyone out there has gotten any cash from a dealer for returning a core, I'd love to hear it.
