I have found this link (sorry, only in Italian) showing pics about the new Volvo V60 *Diesel* plug-in hybrid which will be announced at the Geneva Motor Show in March.

The article says that it will be sold in 2012, it has a 2.4L diesel engine, with 215HP and 440Nm torque, plus an electric engine on the rear wheels of 70HP and 200Nm. The battery is a Li-Ion of 12kWh rating.

CO2 will be less than 50g/km. In the "Pure" EV only mode the range will be 50km. In "Hybrid" mode the fuel consumption will be 1.9L/100km (124MPG....) which yields a range of 1200km. In "power" mode, it will be able to do the 0-100km/h (0-60Mph) in 6.9 secs.

This seems a *very* good competitor for the Prius Plug-in - a *very* good one, especially in EU where Diesel is available everywhere (though quickly closing the price gap to normal gas - in Switzerland diesel costs already more than gas). If it doesn't cost 35.000€ as base price...

Does the article say if it will be sold in the US? I'm assuming it will be Europe only because you guys get all the cool cars :)

    Good post.

I am following a Volvo forum, which in I also found that info regarding this project.
To be honest, i'm afraid price is going to hurt feelings, and also some lack of room (regular V60 is quite small).

Coming from...First, the 5in line turbo diesel 215hp
...second, the 12kwh batt (more than double the PHV Prius)...and third, the rear transaxle, changing suspension structure/fixing points

Let's wait for the first hybrid-diesel Peugeot 3008hyrid4, then my bet will be more accurate.

And I bet on...V60 costing +50keuros...and released only in 2013 (date for a first Volvo/Geely hybrid, while C30EV still under construction, seems more reasonable).
In Pt V60 2.4D already costs 54keuros...(taxes like hell, I know, we are trying to help Portugal to get free of debt LOL)

    If I may ask...
Why a 200hp ICE engine after all? Can never "synergy" be finally understood by manufacturers other than Toyota? Jumping the step to a plug-in-hybrid development (erasing a "simple" hybrid development) is more what the consumer needs, when selling price is an important issue? Isn't that what keeps "normal" hybrids [if there were many hybrids on the list LOL] from selling more here in Europe, not only petrol/diesel prices?

This sounds similar to the diesel hybrid that Peugeot introduced earlier this year in some respects. Should be the Hammer regardless.

Nope but those are the coolest "mode" buttons I've seen.

And I'll bet they even light up when pressed. Someone needs to make a conversion kit for our 2010's to do something similar.

Diesel/plug-in/hybrid. That's a lot of combo. Now someone has to up the ante with a diesel/plug-in/hybrid/solar/hot dog powered car.

The BIG problem with this car is that it's a diesel. This car must meet Euro 5 emissions standards which are much more lenient with what a US car is allowed to spew out (especially one sold in California). However Euro 6 due in 2014 will change that. Diesel hybrid really is a dead end. I'm surprised Volvo went for this as they themselves are trying to get people to correctly not just look at CO2 when thinking about emissions. In London, UK we are having real difficulties with air quality. Particulate Matter and the ground Ozone is the problem and diesel vehicles are the problem. It will be interesting to see if this car uses Urea injection or not to greatly lower these emissions (i.e. being Euro 6)

diesels are the most efficient when HOT. Very poor choice for an engine that needs to start and stop constantly.

This vaporware car will never happen.

Must be kidding, a diesel based hybrid from Volvo with a 30 mile electric range and sub 7 second 0-60 will cost north of $50k I'd have to guess.

Sorry about reviving a Zombie thread . . . but Volvo is finally showing their hand (a bit more) with their 1st attempt at a plug-in:

    https://www.media.volvocars.com/global/enhanced/en-gb/Media/Preview.aspx?mediaid=41587

Volvo XC60 Plug-in Hybrid Concept to Debut at Detroit Auto Show | Hybrid Cars

At the Detroit auto show - the Volvo hybrid that they're waving around is NOT diesel now. Maybe that's just because they're offering something different for the western hemisphere? Who knows. Volvo is late to the plug in party, but at least they're getting closer to getting with the program.

If this version comes to fruition, I won't be looking to installing the aftermarket Plug-In kit for our Lexus RX-SUV. This looks REALLY nice imo.

It would be interesting to know how they start/stop the diesel engine without "much trouble". And how do they keep it hot to run it efficiently. Especially in winter...
But this car is really good on paper, and on the test track. What interesting will be is the price. If it costs way more than an equivalent Volvo, you clearly cannot buy it to save money...like the case of the Volt sold at 44k€....

The price doesn't show, but I have been led to believe it will be about the $70k including our 20% tax. Way, way too expensive.

You'd seriously have to be crazy to buy one for that. Especially with the Tesla Model S just around the corner ;)

Since getting mine, I could count Prius Gen3 I saw on the road, on one hand. Depressing. But understandable - this is the land of german cars, aggressive driving and Diesel. And also lots of company cars, where you don't pay the fuel out of your pocket. And Japanese cars are not sold much in any case, at least here in Munich. German brands have the biggest market share here.

Moreover, the Prius has never been pushed from Toyota (never saw an ad on the road, or on TV or on the Radio). The most Prius I saw (maybe I could count them on 2 hands....) are the Gen2. Even more difficult is to spot Auris Hybrid.

As of late though, I am seeing way more Prius Gen3, I even saw a Gen3 mkII Monday. And I see a *lot* more taxis (in a land full of Mercedes E Class Diesel). So something lately has changed. Maybe the fuel prices, maybe something else.
One day we were 3 Priuses Gen3 at the same traffic light. I thought I was in a dream.... ;)

But yes, this is nothing like CA, or other parts of the US, where it is simply insane - "everybody" has one...here, I am still a "black sheep".
