Why are people even buying used 2010 Priuses??

Myabe. I have worked at a few dealers. Most employees rag on their demo cars. Some of the stories i have heard, and things i have seen. Maybe they just beat/rag/pound the rattles, squeaks out of the cars.

For the difference in price between a used one and a new one, I didn't even consider a used one. Most all of the used ones were TRAC cars or rentals from large rental companies. If buying from a dealer, you are still going to pay tax and doc fees. I looked for private party sales, and have never seen one I would even consider.

 

I just bought a new 2010 III with solar and nav. I looked around for some used ones and the price was only about 1500 cheaper than what i paid for a new one (wich was 1k under invoice). At that price and 0% financing it was a no-brainer.

Not on your entire post, just the 'information' someone was able 'pull' from the GPS. The 2010/2011 GPS system only stores about 200 miles worth of 'cookie trail' storage, so you could not possibly see from it that these destinations were reached. All you could tell was the total miles on the vehicle, and if it were not 'erased', you could see the previously programmed destinations, but would not be able to confirm that the car made those trips. I could enter 10 locations into the GPS, and then cancel each of them after they are computed, and my history would also indicate that I've been all over.

As for the likelyhood of this being 'real' it more likely a dealer, hoping to trick a buyer into thinking that the car was drivin by a 'little old lady' only on the highway, etc. We've all seen this before.

 

^ I made the discovery after the purchase, dealer never mentioned anything about the previous owner and i find that pointless as most people care about the condition and mechanical aspect of a car rather then ohhh lets see the previous destinations entered... Anyway, so far we put 600 miles on it and besides a few small rattles right dash and right rear the car is perfect. I did experience the so called knock at cold start-up for a few seconds last week when the temps got down to bellow 0 but hasn't done it now as temps are back up in the low 30s.

dont have a single squeak, rattle or anything else on mine, just that loud engine noise

as to why people are buying used Pri's. latest on wiki leaks; saudi's lied big time about oil reserves (like we already did not know that) along with all the crap going down in middle east, they are predicting $4 gas by memorial day...

gas around here jumped 12 cents over the past 5 days.

 

To offer an opinion on the question as posed by the title of this thread?

I don't know. In my opinion and my overall observation used vehicles 2 models years old or less...aren't a good enough value to me..personally.

I've actually seen them priced higher than you could find new.

But as always it would depend on the specifics of a specific deal. But my observation is usually the "savings" is maybe $1,000 to $2,000 dollars "tops" vs. new, and IMO that's not worth not getting the vehicle as the original owner, basically knowing it's operational and maintenance history from the start, and also getting the all the warranty from the moment I drive it off the lot....

People can site individual "finds" individual deals...and great. I'm sure they exist. But in general...if I'm considering a used car...I'm looking in the 3 to 5 year old range..OR I'm just going for an utilitarian beater and looking at much older...

The 1 model year old vehicle...just seems like embracing a lot of the risk involved with getting a used vehicle...without IMO usually much benefit...

 

a package 4 for $23,500 out the door is more like $7-8,000 cheaper. are they not like $29,500 or so?

Like I said, you have to evaluate each individual and unique deal. I don't mean to trash someone who has found a "new" used Prius and is happy with the deal...

I'm saying in general...when I look in the paper or investigate used cars, in most cases...I don't find a 1 year old vehicle to be the "best" deal on that same said vehicle.

Are their exceptions? I'm sure...if you found a 1,2, year old Prius and got a good deal...enjoy...

 

This past November we paid $17,900 (+tax/reg) for a used 2010 Prius II with 21K miles, through the Hertz Rent to Buy program. I thought it was worth the savings versus buying new. I'm also guessing that most people renting Prii are paying a premium to rent a "green" vehicle, and are less likely to drive it hard. So far, we're at about 28K miles and no problems.

 

I paid 18,500 ++ for a 2010 II with 7,500. It was only 2,000 more than any Gen2 I could find with 30k. Got it from a VW dealer, said it was a trade for a TDI. Could I have done better? maybe, but I did a lot of leg work and was getting tired. Blizzard with beige and pin stripes.

 

Tell me more about this Hertz rent to buy program. It sounds like you got a great deal, I'm looking for something around that price range.

 

I was able to get a 2010 III with 4200 miles for $18,700. For me the savings was worth it. I had been looking for about 2 months and just kept tabs on things. I talked with alot of dealerships and if they were not able to accept the deal, I chose to move on. I looked nationally and bought it certified from Tom Wood Toyota in Indiana. They shipped it to me and I picked it up 2 days ago. For me it was worth saving a couple thousand dollars, even when factoring it the financing difference.

 

The way it works is that you go to Buy Affordable Used Cars for Sale by Owner- HertzRent2Buy and search through their inventory of cars for sale, which continue to be rented out until they get sold. You reserve a car that's of interest, then at the scheduled time pick it up as a rental. You can back out upon initially seeing the car, with no charges. If after renting the car for two or three days you want to buy it, then you let the Hertz Rent to Buy office know, and they process the purchase just like any other car dealer, including with financing options. You do not have to pay any rental charges if you buy the car. I liked the fact that the rental period gave me time to take the car to our local, trustworthy mechanic.

All of that said, out of curiosity I just checked the Rent to Buy website and found that their 2010 Prius prices (at least in our area) have gone way up! That is inexplicable; you'd now be better off buying new. Are Prius prices again on the rise due to higher gas prices?

 

People like to buy used car because of less price as compare to new. I have also 2009 Priuses Used car which i brought for my son because he is learning driver and i never mind if the will damage. For this purpose i think used car is best option for me.

I bought mine as a demo model with 5000kms and 6 months. Paid $31,000 (Aus) which was $12000 off new price.

I still can't work our why we pay twice as much as US when our dollar is at parity or better.
