I still love my 2006 Prius. However, at 85,000 miles, I recently needed to have both front wheel bearings replaced within 2 weeks of each other. In the case of the first replacement (driver side) they also needed to replace the knuckle. Thankfully, I had purchased the Extended Warranty which covered the repairs. Has anyone else had this problem with their 2006-2009 Prius?
I have a squeal from the bearing or brakes on my '08 with 90,000km on the clock. I will let you know what it turns out to be. The noise appears occasionally when driving along and disappears if you move the steering wheel or brake. So I am thinking it is a front bearing.
sounds like accident damage, are you the original owner? a bad pothole can damage wheel bearings but it's usually just one. a pothole bad enough to damage a wheel bearing will usually ding the rim. Knuckles never wear out they only get bent from crash impact or the repair shop is merchandising.
In my case it was the inboard brake pad had floated and was catching off the disc/rotor lip. The disc/rotor seems to be a lot softer than pads. The pads look almost new but the disc/rotor had worn to where there was a lip on around where the pad was contacting. The noise was due to the pad contacting the lip on my car. The actual bearings and all suspension bushes checked out fine.
Hi Dave, I'm at 96K on my 2006 and had to have the left bearing (and hub) replaced in Nov. 2010 and then the right bearing last month. Same problem where I heard scraping noise when turning to one side and front wheels felt loose while driving. About $250 each for shop repairs ($150 labor, $100 parts). Hopefully they last for a while.
