Sudden Acceleration Verdict Is in - its not a electronic issue

    Have you ever considered that the spike is the result of people learning how/where to complain about an event that's happened to them? And by hearing it on the news they realize they're not the only ones to experience the problem. And at that point, once they learn how to voice a complaint, they may be reporting an event that happened several months ago. So there is a pent up group of people who have experienced unintended acceleration, the publicity facilitates their ability to lodge a complaint. I'd say that's a more accurate scenario than assuming all of the complaints are lies.

    Sorry, I meant to say Toyota has 10X more unintended acceleration complaints than the brand I chose, Honda. And didn't the article say Toyota has more unintended acceleration complaints than the next 5 manufacturers combined? Over 1100 complaints for Toyota, the next highest was under 400. How can you spin that into a positve for Toyota? Or maybe it's just that Toyota cars are perfect, but Toyota owners are horrible drivers and habitual liars?

    Honda's are very good. I have (and do now) own both. But, Honda's are going to cost you much more in required maintenance. It's ridiculous how they gash you on that. Toyota doesn't.

    Actually, they're the main topic of your own posts. You have only 25 posts as of today, and of these 25, only one has anything to do with learning and gleaning information about the Prius. The other 24 posts are either in this thread or evpv's closed thread in which you've spread FUDs and sided with evpv. So much for being interested in learning.

    Sure, but notice that the reporting rate returns to baseline after a couple of months. That is not consistent with your hypothesis.

    Naturally the reporting rate will go down after publicity. The pent up demand is gone because they already submitted a complaint. The information on how to voice a complaint is no longer on the front page of the newspaper. But even after the spike, the average will most likely be higher because more people are aware of how to submit a complaint. And that goes for all brands.

    My experience with Honda has been very good. I have an Accord that I purchased new in 2003, it currently has 85,000 miles on it. I've spent a total of $32 on maintenance other than oil changes, air filters, tires and brakes. I replaced a door lock actuator for $32. Oil changes are $24 at the dealer, sometimes free.

    sell destructive -- for doing all of the above in the span of 3 consecutive posts in 10 minutes. Heck it was late east coast (boston time) at that point, so maybe he needed just to get to bed.
    However he was then silly, --- this am for waking up and then posting that he liked threads like this where he was clearly becoming unraveled.

    and i'll add one more A COWARD for not having the balls to meet up with me so that he can either report back to all of you that he is right.. or retract all of his theories. What i really don't understand is that he claims that he is in biotech research... i hope his research professionally is nothing like what he as done here.. for example EVPV posts a concern about UA so 32K colors boldly posts that he must work for general motors..etc. (this while evpv owns a prius and is posting DIY articles on this forum with pictures of how to upgrade your car!!)

    I think the icing on the cake for me was 32k colors post this morning explaining that only people with something to hide want to prove themselves ...

    Strange to say the least.. and i'm really trying to be nice about it.

    Does that make sense now??

    The Toyota baseline is lower than industry average. So after the publicity and education, and despite ongoing "encouragement" from sleasze lawyers, a normalized reporting rate increase higher than pre-publicity or above industry norms is not seen.

    All together it looks like this:
    A high powered investigation finds no defect or even plausible mechanism;
    High volume data analysis shows no sign of a defect;
    A couple of people cling to anecdotal stories, usually with strong secondary gain agendas.

    1) your last sentence.. who are the couple of people cling(ing) to anecdotal stories?
    2) for these people in #1 what are the secondary gain agenda's for each?

    Having the foot on the accelerator pedal (thinking it is the brake) can explain it also.

    I'm sorry, but that makes no sense. You don't think people can't figure out how to submit a complaint on something that is supposed to be so dramatic until they see it on the news? Please. You are really getting desperate now.

    Why stop there? SUA is reported for all manufacturers. Test every car model from every manufacturers, especially the Chevy Volt.

    Well, that might be true, but you are ignoring some required maintenance. Unless the 2003 Accord is that much different than others I've seen. I've owned five Honda's and eight Toyota's. The Toyota's have been much better cars, and have cost much, much less in maintenance. That said, they're still my second choice, as they are very well engineered and fun to drive.

    Most people don't know where or how to submit a complaint. Most of the time they go to their Toyota dealer and complain. Toyota tells them they can't find anything wrong with the car, and the complaint never gets entered into their database. So they're sent home with no resolution, and since Toyota doesn't record the complaint it just dissappears. That's one reason complaints spike with publicity, because there are pent up complaints that didn't get any resolution through Toyota.

    Most people would get this advice if they wanted to take the complaint further:

    Contact the Better Business Bureau.
    Call the manufacturer of the car (eg. Toyota etc.)
    Call the dealership and ask to speak to the General Manager.

    None of those are going to get them to the NHTSA site ( Search for a Complaint | Safercar.gov | NHTSA ).

    I'm a perfect example. I didn't know about the NHTSA complaint site until about a month ago. I had never been to the NHTSA complaint site until my friend experienced unintended acceleration in his 2010 Prius. I didn't know it existed. It took some work to find it. Now that I know about it I will use it as a research tool for every car I purchase. I will submit complaints when necessary. I will recommend it to my friends. It's a great resource. The more people use it, the better it gets.

    I've also found sites like TOYOTA PRIUS PROBLEMS, 2010 TOYOTA PRIUS PROBLEMS & COMPLAINTS - Page #1 that make it easier to sort through the NHTSA complaints.

    So yes, I think most people don't know about the NHTSA complaint site.
