It is a 5 minutes job - connect Techstream with car, select, customization, Warnings page, click reverse beep option (continous, 1 beep, off), disconnect Techstream and thats it.

Forgive me as I'm new to PriusChat, but is Techstream the same/similar to ScanGuage II?

No - the Techstream is a software which a dealership uses to diagnose and setup the car.

Toyota dealership turned off my back-up beeps, seat belt beeps, and adjusted the headlights to turn off when the car is turned off "for free" when I got a new smart key today

The dealer was kind enough to disable it for free for me. Yippee!

I thought I was smelling fumes in the cabin and it was time for my 5,000 tire rotation. I found PriusChat when researching the fumes and just happened to see the note about the beep.

I went to a more convenient dealer than where I purchased. He didn't know about it but looked in the manual and said it would be $40. That seemed reasonable to me.

They couldn't find the odor. I got a tire rotation, car wash and beep fix for free.

Glad I saw this thread.... I pick up my 2011-4 at 4 this afternoon. I just called and asked them to take care of this before I got there, and they said no problem.:)

It is nothing for a good dealer/technician. Why to have an angry  customer who never returns back?

surely someone has figured out how to do this at home? I did not research before bringing home my 2011.....it's gonna make me crazy! Where are those folks who figured it out and posted the solution on the Gen II?

I was worse. I knew about it but forgot when buying the car as it was kind of a rush due to circumstances at the time.

To do it at home you need a device that can send the appropriate code to the computer. I have a ScanGauge II* and I eventually disabled it myself.

    * My wonderful wife bought it for me for Christmas 2009 :D

Okay, now I am considering the ScanGuage II, too. Does it work any other magic? I am not bothered by the beeps. It is pathetic that it only beeps INside the car, and not outside the car. I think the Toyota engineers misunderstood the requirement when they developed this "feature." "Many beeps while backing up? No prob."

Thanks PriusChat. I also just mine done today by myself and practically for free because I bought the device from Amazon using my credit card points. Now, it is just one nice short brief beep when I shift to R.
If you are in San Diego, I can disable the beeeeeeeps for you for free! It took me only 2 minutes.

I had my reverse beeping altered to just one beep when first shifting into reverse. It just occurred to me, maybe in doing so, that shut off the proximity warning sensor that would beep faster the closer you got to some object when backing up??? I'm so new to the car, I'm still learning. By having the reverse beep changed, did I do that to the proximity warning sensor?

Is the beeping in a 2011 worse than a 2006? We just ordered our new Prius today.

I got used to the beeping in the 2006 immediately, so it was never a problem. Sometimes I wish there was something "melodic" to let pedestrians know that I'm there, but that's another problem entirely. :)

Shut mine off completely. Did it myself, took maybe 3 minutes -had to try it a few times.
Google'd the instructions on my cell phone, gave it a go, and presto. No back-up beep. Really annoying IMO. I know I'm in reverse, WTH. LOL

Is it possible that disabling the beep is as easy as the following steps; no ScanGauge and no dealer needed. I've not tried this as I don't object to the reverse beep (How to Disable Reverse Beep in a Toyota Prius - wikiHow)

With your foot on the brake pedal, press the start button to turn the car on.

    2. Press the trip/odometer button until "ODO" appears on the dashboard (if it's already in that mode when you start the car, press the button three times to cycle through the "Trip" modes until you're back to "ODO" mode)

    3. Press the power button to turn the car off.

    4. With your foot on the brake pedal, press the start button to restart the car.

    5. Press and hold the trip/odometer button within six seconds of starting the car. Continue holding the ODO button for at least 10 seconds, but do NOT release the ODO button until after the next step. (This is easiest if you use the simple method of counting, "one-one-thousand, two-one-thousand, three-one-thousand," etc., up to "ten-one-thousand".)

    6. While still holding the ODO button from the step before, but after 10 seconds have elapsed, shift the car into reverse and quickly press the park button. Now release the trip/odometer button.

    7. Note that the trip/odometer display will show "b on" instead of miles.

    8. Press the trip/odometer button until the display shows "b off."

    9. Press the Power button to turn the car off.

    10. When you start the Prius back up, the reverse beep will be gone.

    11. Note the above only works in the US and not in Europe/UK on the 2009-10 models. However if you are in the UK, ask your local service technician nicely (pop in when they are nice and quiet) and they will change it to a single beep only and usually foc (takes just a few mins for them to do). Which is the way it should have been in the first place.

Note however that some dealers will refuse point blank or tell you it can't be done - don't believe them

Has anyone tried twittel's procedures on a 2011 with success? My dealer still won't do it unless I pay $49 1/2 hr service fee. That's ok, I didn't buy it from them anyway.

It says right in the wiki that this doesn't work on the Gen 3 (2010-2011)
