Can Nav be added later??

I found one address inaccuracy. There is a church where I was going to attend a concert. It was on the way home from work, so I went there to get tix. While I was there, I marked the point and stored it as a memory point.

later I heard the address on the radio, entered it in and compared the locations of the flags. The point made by address was about a mile north of the actual location!

Otherwise, I find the nav quite useful.

Is it POSSIBLE? Yes, but I'm sure it'll end up costing you at least as much as whatever delta you'd save by not getting package #6 in the first place, and probably more.

(Package 5 - never understood why anyone would want that instead of package 4. Package 5 should've been 4 + the homelink mirror)

I'm reading the TomTom BT navigator gives you this exact same functionality and convenience. That might be something to lookup.

TomTom is also looking to integrate traffic information with the GPS path mapping for the Americas? soon. Seems to be available in Britain already. This does then put it one leg above the built-in GPS.

 

Well, sure its possible. You would need to replace the MFD and the steering wheel controls, add NAV ECU, microphone and GPS antenna, create wiring harness. You would need the harness to intercept a speaker so it could take it over, add mute line to silence radio (for BT), B+, ACC, RGBS to MFD, connect to microphone, which normally routes through MFD.

Which is why I said it would probably cost more after the fact than just getting a package 6 in the first place.

Yes - I have seen it done. Cost is around $5,000. They have to replace the MFD, tear apart the dash, steering wheel & rewire. Add in the GPS, DVD under the drivers seat. Takes about 5+ hours of labor, and it doesn't quite look like the factory install as you would see on a #6.

Saw it done on a L.A. Prius - which had option pack #4, but had wanted #6. The only reason I went down to L.A. was to pick up his MFD that they took out to replace with the new MFD.

I *was* contemplating this early on - and when I heard about the horror of what had happened to a buddy down in L.A. which had this done at the dealer, I went out and bought a Magellan instead.

I installed the Motorola Bluetooth Car Kit IHF1000. Cost $300, plus the Magellan ($940), and you get the same functionality PLUS you can take the Magellan and use it in your other car.

Bottom line - Yes, it can be done, but why?

 

Danny, I recently had an issue with my navigation. It said I arrived at my destination and all I saw were trees in every direction. It was off by almost 3/4 of a mile down the road. Other than that I love this thing. Stan

 

We rented a car in Palm Springs that had a Magellan GPS and were very impressed with it. It has a voice, as many of them do. The only thing you can't do with this one that you can with the built in one, is talk to it...well, actually, we did talk to it, but it doesn't recognize the words we used...... But there are posts from other Prii owners who say that this feature doesn't work very well, and not at all if you're from Texas or elsewhere where there is a thick regional accent.

I think you can find an excellent after market GPS that will be as good as what the Prius comes with, AND will cost you far less. You should think about the cost of the software updates you will need to keep current. My brother in law drives a Honda Accord with an expired data base. It's ok for really solid geographical things like the Space Needle that aren't going to move anytime soon, but it has no idea how to negotiate through the myraid new housing developments and other urban growth items. It would also cost him about 300 bucks for the data upgrade.

I didn't get the Nav for my car because I couldn't afford the extra 5k for the package it came with, and I thought I could easily get a great GPS later if I needed it. I would like to get one suitable for both car and airplane.

An add on GPS can be programmed while the car is moving and you can take it with you in another car.

Thats almost $5000 more than the package 3 that has everything else I want, so I'm not opting for it either. Too bad its just not offered as a standalone option.
