23rd tank. 47.6MPG (Calculated) 51.2 MPG (Indicated)

Cold temps 10-40F. 100% ECO Mode. One rainy day. No ethanol. Cheated with engine block heater in the morning. Blocked the lower grill.

Blocking the lower grill helped about 6% from the last tank. If I can average 47MPG in the winter, I would love it. I'll see if the trend continues over the next few tanks.

Total gallons 228.649; Total miles 10462. Three long (>1000 miles RT) plus couple of short (~500 miles) road trips during summer/fall. City mileage is quite poor, especially in colder temperatures.

Newbie to this great forum...
We decided to rent a 2010 Prius through the 3 day Hertz Rent2Buy program for a 1200 mile trip we had planned, about 550 each way and some local running around. After some initial reservations issues the actual trip with the car exceded our expectations. Due to below average temperatures in the low 30's and a 10-15 mph headwind, 2 people and about 150 lbs of baggage, I wasn't expecting to even get the EPA rated milaege from it, especially as this was a rental vehicle. Knowing that usually rentals are not really topped up properly, we decided to just become comfortable with the car first and get out of town before stopping to fill up and check the tire pressures, and zero a trip odometer, which we did. Tire pressures on the GY Assurances were already 39 front and 38 & 37 on the rears, so we left them alone, close enough. Played with the power switches before our stop and when we noticed the mileage drop in the Eco mode, we returned the car to the normal mode, after checking the manual. Finally, set for the westbound trip it only took a few hours, (202.5 miles at an avg of 49 mph) for it to reach 60.0 mpg, quite a surprise considering all the adverse parameters, so we took a photo of the event, expecting it to be the best for the trip. Leg A was completed with 338.6 miles (70% hwy and 30% towns), 60.5 mpg at an avg speed of 50 mph....actual fill at destination was 5.898 gals for 57.4 mpg calculated. Not too shabby all things considered. Prior to the return, again we topped up, this time with BP's Invigorate fuel, zero'd Trip B this time...now with 3 people and even more bags, away we went to sample an almost total hwy experience. The Prius didn't disappoint...outside temps were slightly warmer, in the mid 40's avg for the day, almost no wind.....only one rest stop prior to the final fill up but about half the trip was in light to moderate rain. Well, not even 150 miles into the trip, we were showing 62.2 mpg (trip peak was 62.5), but this time the average speed was almost 55 mph....5 mph higher than the previous leg, so the combo of improved understanding of the energy management and some slightly more ideal conditions had bumped up the numbers. To celebrate, we snapped another photo.... Final fill, had the computer showing Trip B as 517.3 miles, @ 60.1 mpg at exactly 60 mph. Actual fill was 8.365 gal for a calculated 61.84 mpg. Fantastic considering we had increased our speeds to, at times, 75 mph to bring the avg of that leg up to 60 mph. Our goal had been to see if the Prius could get "60 @ 60" under real conditions. I'm impressed! Didn't buy the car as it had a little more rash than advertised and was the wrong color combination for us, but, we're certainly on the prowl. The only maybe trivial negatives were the seat comfort and the comparably poor sound system quality, at least relative to our trusty '04 Taurus in which, by the way, we are able to get 37 mpg highway. The seat comfort surpised me a bit as it hadn't been very evident here, but later I found it was quite a common complaint over at the Edmund's site. The issue appears to be solved with the leather option and that package, I'll bet, probably also contains the JBL sound system. Those were the only real factors that seemed out of tune (if you pardon the pun) with the rest of the car. All in all, a very pleasant experience!

Just bought a 2011 III in Houston, our first Prius, and so far only used 1/4 tank in 5 days so this is definitely break-in rough mileage.

To work trip is 10.1 miles each way, 3 miles of stop and go, 7 thick freeway from 45 to 70 mph mixed. Cool morning trips lowest mileage was 49.8, highest 53.4, coming home when it's warm outside and three more stop signs on side streets 55.1 lowest, and 62.0 highest.

Every trip driven the same, with variable traffic usually thick on freeway, several stop signs, four stoplights. At lights and in traffic I always used whatever gas needed to keep up with the flow, no eco light and full bar frowny face power.

I drove normally similar to my old Elantra and didn't use heater or air conditioner, it's the 'good' season here for a few months.

So I'm completely satisfied with mileage, and if it improves wearing in, well icing on the cake!

 

I wish I could contribute a really high mpg to this discussion as it appears that a lot of you are getting great mileage, but I have been driving my Prius(new owner) for only 1700 miles and, so far, I have been averaging about 39-40 mpg. I am not a speed demon as I have been keeping the displays in the economical range and driving in eco mode and constantly have people passing me when starting from a light. Most of the time I am driving by myself. I am starting to wonder if I bought a lemon. Does anyone have any ideas on what might be causing the poor mpg?

 

Answer the questions listed here You will get a lot of suggestions that may help.

Prius mileage can drop significantly in cold weather. Also your mileage will improve as your engine "breaks in", I saw improvements after 4-6K miles. The first suggestion is to check your tire pressures. You can gain "some"[Opinions differ from 1-5%] mileage by increasing your tire pressures to 40PSI -Front and 38PSI-rear.

My first few tanks last winter were not very good. New engine- cold-snow, low tire pressure yada, yada.

Snow and bitter cold the last week hurt the tank average. Decent for winter I guess.

I can't seem to break the 40mpg per-tank average (hand calculated) with all the deep-cold, deep-snow weather we've had since I got the car.

Last week was my worst per-tank average yet, 36 mpg.

Still, in these same conditions, my 4runner got 13mpg so I'm not complaining. I know that the weather, winter-blend gas, snow tires, etc. are very much a worst-case scenario for this car.

I envy the MPG you warm climate guys get. looking forward to spring!

 

First tank on '11 Four w/ Solar:

Displayed 441.4 miles / 53.4 mpg

Can't hand caculate, because I reset when the car was delivered after running for a while during demonstration.

Weather was moderate: Highs in the low 50's to low 60s; lows in the low 30's. 80% hwy / 20% city - 4 days of driving.

 

Brand new 2010 II Ribbon Blue, first post-purchase fill up (335 mi on ODO) displayed 47.6, calculated 46.3. Probably calculated is a tad higher than actual as first tankful was topped off.

After filling and 25 more miles of mostly freeway, display shows 53.5. Curious to see second tank mpg.

 

My first trip back from work:

50.2 MPG - ECO Mode Off

In 8 miles trip of suburban city driving.

In my way to work I did 48 MPG - ECO Mode ON.

I wonder if any one of you with a good average has the ECO mode ON.

I am new to the forum and thought I would share some of my prius consumption data. I owned a gen 2 prius 2004 – 2006 (50,000 miles) and a gen 3 from 2009 to now (24,000 miles so far). I enclose a graph of calculated MPG which I averaged on a monthly basis comparing my gen 2 and 3 consumption in UK MPG. My driving consists of a mix of town and A-road driving (up to 60 mph) as well as some motorway driving (70 mph). My commute has remained the same over both cars. There are a couple of noteworthy points. First is the MPG versus time of year (or ambient temperature) demonstrates a noticeable drop in MPG during the winter. Second, although the gen 3 is generally better than the gen 2 the overall improvement is small (it must be noted that the winters of 2009 and 2010 have been pretty cold with plenty of snow).

 

Picked up my 2010 PIII (with solar roof/nav and aftermarket leather) last Friday evening...Drove 300+ miles over the weekend and filled up the gas tank today after averaging 49.6 mpg on the first tank of gas!

Very, very happy with this vehicle!

 

Picked up my new Prius on Friday. After 206 miles I have averaged 58.3 UK MPG doing a mixture of motorway and town driving. Weather is cold at around 3 to 7 Celsius (about 38 to 45F)

If I get 3 or 4 MPG extra in the summer, that will be great

 

2011 MPG Stats I like, I like!

Just got a 2011 Prius II and on my first tank from the dealership I only gotten 38 MPG, but then on my second tank with careful driving I got up to 52 MPG. Finally on my third tank, I kept it on power mode the whole time gotten 49 MPG!!! My question is how do I keep it on power mode when I start up my car instead of pressing it every single time? Any answers will be appreciated =)

Just had it the one month in 2010, so December 2010 was 51.25 mpg US, calculated, not from the MFD.

EDIT: *Sigh*, this is why we read first. Thought it was an all of 2010 mileage thread without seeing the first page. I have a 2007 and this should be stricken from the record.

On another note, there really should be a delete post button for blonde moments (I have brown hair).

 

I see everyone posting MPG, I would like to know the MPH as well. It seems in order to get higher MPG you have to drive in lower MPH than the normal speed of all the cars on the road.

Lower grill blocking and EBH seem to be only marginally helpful. This is my worst tank this winter so far.
