    Hey Guys

I loved my Prius to death on day 1 but now I am having some frustrating problems starting and stopping the car.

I drove the car on Sunday for several journies with no problems. I even did a 120 mile round trip in which i cruised at about 65 and 70mph to test the mpg (around 50-55mpg which I was quite happy with)

    Anyway.. onto today..

So I tried to start the car at 7:20 for my usual drive to work and tried the usual approach..

    1) unlock doors
    2) put key fob into slot
    3) put foot on brake
    4) press the power button

but nothing happened. I cant remember the sequence but various messages popped up. After that I thought i would lock and unlock the car but i wasnt able to, so I stepped out of the car and was still not able to lock the car. All I could do was lock from the inside the 3 other doors and manually lock the driver door. (and call a friend to pick me up!).

So this evening I have tried again. still problems..

    1) the engine management button came on (so i restarted) -
    2) got a message saying "Caution, the transmission P lock mechanism is abormal. PArk your car on a flat surface and fully apply the handbrake (cant do this as my drive is on a slope sadly)
    3) I did notice at various times a very big red triangle with an exclamation mark.

I powered off and on and managed to get the car to start. I took it for a short drive and it felt ok. When I brought it back to the house i turned it off and tried the process again with similar results to above.

When i locked the car to go back to the house i noticed an orange flashing icon.. which looks like a car with a key in it. I do not know if i have smart key.. the on/off button doesnt seem like i do as it doesnt seem to have 2 positions.

Any help? Bit frustrated tonight after a perfect first two days.

Do you think its the battery?

I believe the car has been sat on the forecourt since last summer although the did fully charge it.. if its this then I will be happy as its a quick fix!

Help me to love my prius again!!

12v battery problem, if the car sat for that length of time with out being charged it will be dead. All the symptons you have described point strait to the battery. Double check no lights left on.

I have to admit, even before we purchased the car we did think it might be an issue. I am suspecting the garage just put it on charge before i picked it up, but as the battery is not able to sustain much charge it quickly depletes.

Can I just go to Toyota and they can replace? Any ideas on the costs?

If I can get it running smoothly I would be a very happy man again!

    12v battery issue!

My Toyota dealer charge a fixed rate of £100 (I think) to exchange one. You certainly shouldn't pay more than £200 fully fitted but it should solve your problems and possible electrical gremlins that go with a failing 12volt.

The Prius doesn't charge the 12v as quickly as in a 'normal' car so it is very important to look after your 12v. Be grateful if you could update us all as to how you get on.

Toyota will have them in stock but probably expensive, most motoring shops sell them at a much better price. Halfords stock batteries that fit but are slightly higher price.I have seen Varta and Lucas batteries for around £45. The prius has smaller battery terminals than most cars but these can easily be changed. Buy a battery with as high an amper hour cappacity as you can get do not bother about cranking amps as the 12V battery does not start the engine. Can you go back to the seller to replace the battery.
Where are you in UK i live in Herefordshire but come from the midlands.
    Good luck.

    Most definitely the 12V battery.

Note that UK Prius models never had a Smart Key System for the 2nd Gen IIRC.

Hi & thanks for the quick replies, forums like this are really incredibly useful.

I did have a feeling it was the battery, but when your on day 3 and you get these issues it can be somewhat concerning!

I would prefer to go to Toyota but anything over £100 would put me off.. I will call them tomorrow morning.

Do you think this halfords one will work? Halfords Lead Acid Battery HB054. Its £68 plus £5 fitting which seems reasonable, but i dont want to risk further problems for a £30 savings.

And I will certainly let you all know the outcome...

That battery is fine and if your not ok with fitting yourself fitting charge is fine. Motor shops are cheaper but you still have the problem of fitting although any small garage would do this. You should have no problems i think Halfords garranty is 3 years. You may have to reset your electric windows (see hand book) and fuel consumption may go up slightly till the engine computer learns your driving style

Thanks Britprius - I will call Toyota just to check their price but suspect I will go the halfords route as there is one very close. Is the battery in the front or back?

Tideland Prius - thanks for the info. I wasnt sure, there is a button under the steering wheel which doesnt seem to do anything and has a radar type logo. Seemed like it was related.

The 12V battery is located in the rear of the hatch area, on the right-hand side below the triangle-shaped hatch floor piece.

One problem with the Halfords HB054 is that the positive terminal is on the right hand side, at least per the photo in this link:
    http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/..._productId_264271_langId_-1_categoryId_165762

You need a battery with the positive terminal on the left hand side.

Another problem is that it appears this battery is the traditional flooded acid type. The Prius battery is AGM and is supposed to be replaced only with AGM for safety in the event the right-rear fender is hit in an accident, crushing the battery case (which would leak acid everywhere if the battery is flooded acid.)

A third potential problem is that the battery terminals may not be the correct size; compare against the original equipment battery to see whether the terminal connectors will need to be replaced.

In the UK the battery supplied by Toyota is the flooded type as standard i have a 2008 with OEM battery that is flooded. The HB054 has the small terminals and is produced in both terminal layouts.

Hi there, I just installed the Halfords battery in my 04 Prius. It fits, but as Patrick Wong correctly stated, the terminals are set on the far side of the block. You just have to stretch the +ve terminal block a bit. The terminal connectors are the correct size. Slight problem is that there is a black plastic ventilation duct that goes over and above the battery, and it will be a tight fit with the terminals beings on the far side. I managed to get it installed. Other thing to note is that the top cover which sits over the battery has 3 legs underneath that sits on the battery. Because the terminals are right underneath the rear two legs, I have to just cut them off (easily with a bread knife, they snap off).

The button under the steering is the internal radar, if you lock the car with a window open and reach into the car with the radar on the alarm will sound. Hope this helps.

I'm pretty sure the Toyota price is £100 fitted. Ring your dealer and check. Why mess up a complicated car like the Prius for the sake of trying to save £30!?!? You'll recoup that £30 in petrol savings in no time!

If you mess up the reconnection of the 12v (is the terminals are reverse etc) then you mess up the computers and might probably fry them. I wouldn't trust Halfords to change my wipers, let alone the 12v on a car like the Prius.

Get yr arse down to Toyota and get it sorted for 4 years peace of mind. ;)

It sounds like you've positioned the battery so that the terminals are near the fender. The problem with that installation is if the right rear fender is hit and the positive terminal contacts the fender, this results in a fire hazard as the battery produces sparks and vents its stored energy into the fender.

UPDATE: Took my Prius to Toyota, they said the old battery had a dead/bad cell, it was only generating 10.17v. They swapped it out for a new one and said the symptoms I described matched up with a faulty battery. I am crossing my fingers.

One thing that did concern me, they said the water pump has a very slight leak & quoted me 350 to fix it. However, they said it didnt need to be fixed straight away.

Thanks for the advice, really helpful and lets hope its ok now :)

Sorry this may come too late since you got it fixed already. My question is whether the used car comes with any warranty? Since you have only owned the car for a few days shouldn't the seller be responsible for the bad battery?

Yes the water pump tends to weep a little bit. Just keep an eye on the coolant level - if it does not drop over a long period of time then it's probably OK.

    Good luck! :)

I brought my Prius from a non Toyota dealer and to be honest, Id rather just get it fixed at Toyota. I wanted to get the car from Toyota but the prices were obviously far higher so I took this gamble.

I am very happy with the car so far, it will be a perfect family car (which is why we brought it, as we are expecting our first child in March)..
