I wonder where this new 65 MPG vehicle will fall in the Honda lineup...it doesn't make too much sense to create a new vehicle point between the Civic and the ultra-compact Insight... Maybe they are talking about the next generation of Civic Hybrid engine, out next time they rev the Civic (should be a good couple of years).
Tis good. Just note diesel prices here are rather expensive compared to petrol here in BC. That 65mpg could be really nice. Hmm, 4 cylinder. Can't be on the Accord cause even then its extra weight might negate it. Perhaps on a Honda Fit? or updated HCH?
Im not sure this is worth their trouble when they charge 3.25 a gallon for diesel when at the same time theyare charging 2.45 a gallon for gas? At least thats the game here in washington state. Its almost like they penalyze folks who try to save cost and break free from their tenacious grip?. I remember when diesel was much cheaper than gas?
I noticed that too. Here in Denver diesel is $3.50/gal while the 85 octane petro is $2.56. Diesel is going up and gasoline is coming down. I figured that they'd tend to move in the same direction, not apart. Anybody have a guess as to why that's the case? Are there supply issues (appearently) with diesel right now?
I think the real hardcore diesel people are thinking about those cars for the possibility of biodiesel... They all want to put used vegetable oil into their tanks and have that run their diesel cars without paying for any kind of petroleum based product. Nevermind the environmental effects of burnt oil , it's still freaking cool.
yeah. And it's cheap! Of course you have to spend the time making it and you have to be pretty precise or you've just wasted a lot of time. You also have to handle some of the intermediate products. One of them, sodium methoxide, will kill you nerves faster than they register pain. Comfortably numb.... or not. Still, that's no big deal if you're careful and wear the right protective gear. It's just gotta be great to drive up to McDonalds and walk off with the raw ingredients for your car's fuel!
Notice how Honda didn't give any timeline whatsoever other than they might have a prototype of just the ICE next year. I hate when car companies do that. :angry: BTW, GM has already started research on HCCI engines: GM, Bosch and Stanford Partner to Develop HCCI; Targeting a 20% Improvement in Gasoline-Engine Fuel Efficiency
Note the core technology in the story IS NOT diesel - it is HCCI - high compression using gasoline. Interesting technology if they can pull it off.
I'm admittedly not well versed in fuel production, but do I remember correctly that diesel takes less refining than gasoline?

indeed, and Toyota is considered to be leading the field in their HCCI implementations. It is only that Toyota does not issue press releases 2 years before they have something, which is mostly because they have the best product out there right now.
I thought Honda already has a 64:1 compression ratio gas engine in one of their japanese car? I thought I saw it some where earlier in the year.
Sure, but until there is there are quite a few people taking advantage of it. Hell, before modern advances in gold mining/extraction technology the mines used to let people sift through their tailings for the pure chunks, which strangely cost too much to process. That hasn't happened for a while with improvements in the processing... go figure.
