Folks, I had a minor problem today with my prius, as while driving in LA rain, my Engine check light came up and engine started vibrating. It is okay when a motor is driving the car, but as soon as engine kicks in i feel vibrations and Engine Check light starts blinking. Rest of the electronics and battery charges normally. Does this thing happen with anyone before? I had to drive in the rain today for about 50 miles... Also, I found similar thread but no answer.....take a look with following subject thread. (I cant post direct link.. "Vibration and check engine on my 2008" MAK
I'm guessing it's a missfire caused by rain getting onto either the ht leads or some other electrical component in the engine bay. Was it very heavy rain or did you drive through any deep puddles by any chance? If it was a missfire has it settled down again or is it still doing it? I'd be careful as if the engine is missing that badly it will be pumping fuel into your catalytic converter which can damage it rather quickly.
It is raining horrible in LA right now, there is water everywhere on roads and I dont think i drove through any pothole which would create such problem. The speed on freeway is bit slow due to water. I dropped it off to my nearest dealer to take a look. I did not dare to drive further as I sensed something weird and unusual. Do you know how much will cost to clear up water from engine zone?
I had a similar experience with my 2006 Prius with about 97,000 miles on it. While driving through heavy rain on the Interstate, the "Check Engine" warning light came on. I drove to a nearby Toyota dealer to have it checked, but they could find nothing wrong, so I drove on. Within an hour, driving on dry Interstate highway, the same warning light came back on, the cruise control wouldn't stay engaged, and then the car seemed to lose partial power and began to slow down. I drove the car back to the dealer, where the problem was then diagnosed as being in the inverter pump, which Toyota has since issued a recall on. I was about to trade the car anyway, and traded for a 2010 Prius rather than drive a loaner car and wait on the inverter pump, which I was told was in very short supply and would take a while to replace. I cannot say if the pump was definitely the problem, but mention it as a possible source of your problem. The fact that we were both driving in rain when the warning light came on may be pure coincidence, and I will be interested to find out what the source of your problem turns out to be.
Check the seam in the middle of the plastic cowl cover to see if the seal has been broken allowing water to drip down and find its way into one of the spark plug wells. Good luck!
I agree with GC that an engine misfire is the most likely problem. Water can drip down from the cowl onto the engine valve cover, then seep into the spark plug wells. The repair cost will depend upon whether the problem has existed long enough to cause damage to the spark igniters and spark plugs. It might cost as much as $500 in parts plus an hour of labor time if all four igniters and plugs are replaced. If only one igniter and plug is replaced, then 1/4 of that amount.
Thank you all for your inputs I just confirmed from the dealer that it is a engine misfire, did not explain exactly the problem as they are still finding the problem. I have extended warranty on the car, hopefully it will cover everything. MAK
Hello, I drive a 2006 Prius with 143k miles which I have bought from a Toyota dealer a month ago. Within in the first two weeks I had the Dead light on for two times. For the first time, they cleaned the throttle body and for the second time they changed two ignition coils saying the present ignition coils were not Toyota made. I thought I am done with repairs but today I while I was driving to work it was raining and the check engine light came on. That light comes on whenever it rains. I have checked the fuel tank and saw that some water is accumulated around the gas cap due to the rain. Can you suggest me a solution for this?
welcome! you need to have the trouble codes read at the dealer, to find the problem and solution. the only easy check is gas cap tightness.
