100,000 Mile Club

My 06 (bought new Jan. 06) just turned the magic 100,000 last week. I have done all my own maintenance (oil, filters, tire rotations). According to the maintenance manual, it called for engine coolant and inverter collant change, so I took it to Northridge Toyota. I told them that the oil, tires, etc were already done, and all it should need are coolant changes. They looked up the history online, and since I had the inverter pump and coolant changed at 70,000 on warranty (by another dealer) they said the inverter coolant was OK for awhile.

The previous day we had been in the local hills 3-4000 feet, and the car did something really wierd, it started losing power, and the main MFD screen was blinking off and on. It lasted about 5 minutes, then cleared up, and has caused no issues since. It acted just like the over-achiever traction control cutting out, but the roads were dry. I mentioned it to the dealer, and he sugested a spark plug change. The total for engine coolant and new spark plugs came to $255. Its all I have ever spent on the car except for tires, gas and oil. I did notice that their highest level (100,000) maintenance was listed for $249! which includes all the major service items. I was changed more than that for only two items. Go figure. I have never changed the 12V battery. The dealer checked it, and said it was OK, so far.

I love this car. Its on its third set of tires. Over 67,000 on the Integrities, 35,000 on a set of BFG G-force sports, and now Michelein Pilot Exalto, which seem a good compromise in handling (wet and dry) vs. decent mpgs. My gas mileage has always been 44-46, and I run 40/38 tp, when I remember to check it. I don't drive for great mpgs, but more like a normal car, 80% freeway.

I did the gas pedal recall, inverter pump mentioned above (due to Check Engine light), and that's about it. No other problems. Best car I have ever driven 100,000 miles in!

 

Although it did not hurt to replace the iridium spark plugs (which are due for replacement at 120K miles in most locales, 150K miles in CA), I doubt that was the cause of this problem. Were any warning lights on?

An intermittent problem is tough to identify, but this sounds more like a problem with the inverter.

 

No warning lights, no Check Engine. The MFD screen blinked off and on 2-3 times that I saw (screen completely black, than back on at less than 1 sec, intervals. My scan gage showed no codes, and water temp (188°), volts (13.7), all seemed normal. We were going up a hill that we had traveled earlier in the day with no problems. We stopped the car, to do some shopping, probably less than 1/2 hr, and when it restarted, all was fine. I was thinking 12V battery, but dealer says no. And they couldn't repeat the problems. Its been OK ever since. I have been hearing strange "whirring" noises from up front somewhere, like a pump cycling. It sounds very similar to when the thermos pump runs after shut down. The dealer looked for the noise, and didn't hear it. It is intermittent ... the worse kind of problem to find and fix.

When the inverter pump failed at 70,000 I heard no noises, and the car drove fine, just got a Check Engine and lots of other lights.

 

I'm wondering whether your 12V battery had an intermittent short in one of the cells. That would cause the 12V bus voltage to sag down and maybe that would be the reason why the MFD blanked out.

 

An amazingly high fraction of complaints are solved by a simple 12v battery replacement. What a car!

 

I have a 2005 model which I bought used in June 2010. It has 92250 miles on it when I got it. Paid $9000 for it. Great condition except for passenger side front and rear door locks which quit on me that first week I got it. Dealership replaced them and I paid for labor. This week, the driver side front door actuator stopped working. It will cost me $500 to have it replaced. Anybody with knowledge and experience with DIY would be appreciated. The car currently has 103500 miles and averages 54MPG. I am quite satisfied with my vehicle. My first hybrid, and I don't think I will be driving anything else from here on.

It is not the door lock switch. It is the internal parts -- the actuator itself.

 

How much did your dealer charge for the Inverter and Regular coolant changes. My local dealer quoted me what seemed like very high prices.
Perhaps they are, or maybe they're reasonable - I want more datapoints.

 

I bought the Prius II in July 2004 by the Toyota Dealer of Belluno (Dolomites).
I reached the milestone of 160000 km (100000 miles) on the occasion of the 2nd meeting Hybrid Cars fitted with the organization of George and The Tramp.
Change oil and filter every 15000 km (9400 miles) according to Toyota's Italy.
Roads mainly in Dolomites, with all the mountain passes paths several times. I used four sets of tires 195/55-16 mandatory in Italy for the Prius II.
Michelin Primacy OE (too hard) summer - and then Snowcontrol Pirelli winter - Falken (soft) – and Bridgestone winter. Consumption average 21 km / liter
I recently changed the front brake discs and pads.
Replace some bulbs and added wireless rear view camera.

Hello all! I am new here
Mine is an 04. I bought it with 73k miles on it and now have 150,741 miles on it now. I have had no issues with it at all. I am about to go on a 2300 mile road trip next month. The plugs have never been replace. I am thinking of replacing them today. Is there anything else I should replace before I go on my trip (pvc, coil, etc)?

 

Yes, you should replace the iridium spark plugs, PCV valve, and serpentine drive belt. Check the engine and cabin air filters and replace if necessary.

The engine and inverter coolants should have been replaced at 100K miles. If that was not done previously then it should be done now.

The transaxle ATF also should be replaced if this was not previously done.

 

I will do the belt, plugs and PVC today. I am assuming I should leave the original coil packs alone for now? Is there a step by step guide for the engine and inverter coolants job? I would like to attempt a DIY if possible.

Also what should I expect to pay for the ATF job, I am sure there is no way to DIY this one

After you have removed the spark igniters, you should visually inspect them. Look for corrosion on the terminals and cracking or burn marks on the plastic body. If you don't see any problems and don't have any misfire DTC then there's no reason to replace the igniters.

Changing the transaxle ATF is a very easy job. You will need 4 quarts of Toyota ATF WS (cost ~$8-9 per US quart) and optionally two aluminum gaskets for the drain and fill plugs. There are numerous posts on how to do this. Special tools needed: plastic funnel with 3 ft-long flexible tail to make it easy to refill, 24 mm socket, and 10 mm hex key socket.

I have posted on how to replace the inverter/transaxle and engine coolants. Use Toyota Super Long Life Coolant which is 50%/50% premixed and will cost ~$21 per gallon or so. You will need at least 3 gallons (maybe 4 if you spill some) and optionally an aluminum gasket for the transaxle coolant drain plug. I suggest you do the inverter coolant first as that is easier than the engine. Good luck.

 

I have a 2005 Prius with 230,000 miles. Replaced 2 front wheel bearings and the headlight aiming mechanism (rusted out). The button the right side on the steering wheel don't all work.
Headlamps go out on their own until I power them off and on. CD player stopped working 3 years ago.

It has been a great car and mileage is about 50mpg.

 

I'm a little late to the party (over 100,000)

Bought my 2006 "driftwood pearl" Prius at a dealer in Sedalia MO in May 2006 (Small story, put down a $1000 deposit on one closer to me in December 2005, had my 1992 Pontiac Bonneville w 225000 miles on it finally die in April 2006, so I had to come up with a car on short notice (dealer had 6-8 month wait).

So I called all the dealers in town and got the same answer. Most were 6 month wait or asking above MSRP AND 6 months wait or were over a year wait and not taking any more reservations.

After I expanded my search to neighboring communities I found one in Sedalia, they had a tan package 2 and a white package 7 (I think) on order that hadn't been claimed. The only catch was they wanted a $1000 non-refundable deposit. I gave them my credit card .. they gave me the name of a car transport ship ,. so I watched as my car made it's way on the slow boat from Japan.

More to the point, I have 115,000 miles on mine now, average 46 mpg.

For maintenance and repairs, the rear spoiler was replaced under warrenty after it came loose at around 10,000 miles and the coolant interter pump was replaced around 25k. I got the 100,000 warrenty but didn't end up getting any use out of it.

Maintenance has been largely preventative,

transmission fluid at 50k, 100k
inverter and main coolant at 100k
full synthetic every 5k
got 55k miles out of the stock tires - replaced with Michelin X-Radial

 

Just hit 100,000 today!

I have an 07 touring I picked up in June of 2007. I have a 45 mile commute to work which the Prius is great for. I cruise at 60 mph.

Here's some stats:

Lifetime mpg: 44.8
MFD Lifetime mpg: 45.6

Maintenance:
Oil change every 4,987 miles on average using Mobil 1 Synthetic 5w-30 oil and Mobil 1 filter, tire rotation at the same time. I do the oil changes and Firestone does the tire rotations for free. Cabin filter and such at usual times. Wipers every once in a while.

Other noteworthy services:
11,858 - Brake Fluid Flush with TSB
33,127 - New headlights for free from dealer (see thread)
50,422 - Replaced stock tires with Bridgestone Potenza 195/55/16
52,191 - Replaced both tail lights (driverside was out)

I plan on doing the coolant replacement next Friday.

Overall very pleased with the car.

Edit: forgot to mention my driver side actuater went at 45,000 so I have to use the mechanical key to get in.

 

I bought my 04 prius (121,000) miles 3 months ago and had the local dealer do service and check everything. They changed the oil & filter and trans fluid. He recommended service and adjust rear brakes ($52.50), complete brake system flush, engine coolant chem flush, drain/fill inverter coolant, new spark plugs, and fuel injector flush. Each of these will cost $125.00 average give or take 10.00

 

I forgot to add Thanks to this site found that I had a inverter pump recall. had that taken care of today NC. They had to drain and refill the coolant NC.

Also replaced my own plugs 46 bucks dealer parts & 1.5 hrs my time. cool!
changed my oil twice now simple job 0.5 hr.

I'm a courier and drive 200+ miles 6 days a wk. .............I Love This Car!
