I took my Prius in after 6-months, and the car dealership told me that since I had only driven about 3k miles, that I should just wait until I'd had the car a year.

Now it has been a year, and I have around 7k miles. I would prefer to take it in to my trusted dealership, but won't be able to for about two months (I'm currently in another part of the state, where the Toyota servicing centers got less than glowing reviews). How bad would it be to wait another two months, keeping in mind (to repeat) that the car has never been serviced, is a year old, and has less than 10k miles.

    Thanks!

    You'd be okay to wait.

I'm sure you'd be okay to wait. Personally I would go ahead and have the oil changed, but I'm particular about things like that.

My interpretation of service requirements (to keep warranty intact) is oil change every 10000 miles or 1 year whichever comes FIRST.

I would have the oil changed and make sure they use 0W20 synthetic, the rest of the service is just checking things which could wait. The tire rotation could be skipped completely.

If you are going to wait two extra months I suggest checking with your dealership or Toyota and make sure it would not impact the warranty.

As far as the car is concerned it will fine, I think the warranty is the consideration.

I was notified by my dealer I needed to bring it in for the 5000 miles service. I asked about it changing to 10,000 and they told me they were still doing the 5000 since they said it was free no problem I carried it in . When I asked what oil they were using they said oh we are only going to rotate tires. It has been approx. 1000 miles and I get the following e-mail from them. (Thank you for your recent visit. However, your 2010 Prius may still need the following services:

    • Clean and Service Engine Induction System

Call or click below to schedule an appointment to have these important services completed.) I haven't contacted them yet but would like some feedback. I expect they are trying to make some money. Has this happened to anyone else. Did not list dealer this time may later. thanks for any and all info. Thomas

Sounds like they want to check your air filter. You can do that yourself... see your owner's manual.

If it isn't in the owners manual as Toyota required service and you don't have problem, don't let the stealership do it.

The fact that the dealer is trying to sell you that "service" at this low mileage just goes to show that he is a sleazeball.
The only good that came out of that e-mail is that you now know he is a sleaze-ball.

I've just started looking through the Owners Manual supplement that outlines "recommended" Maintenance. My Canadian book makes no mention of in-dash alerts, and mentions resetting something in "US model only". I gather US models do have some sort of in-dash alert: is that correct?

Anyway, Toyota's description of recommended maintenance is definitely non-chronilogical. What I've gathered so far is that something needs to be done every six months (assuming you're low mileage, and time governs). But apart from that it get's dicey. There's 3~4 categories of things to be done, and they sort-of overlap, get shuffled.

It's got me thinking to make up a spreadsheet, with 6 months intervals across the top, and the various maintenance items down the left side. Then go date-by-date, and figure out just what needs doing.

I don't doubt dealerships have already gone through this excercise, and it's not that I don't trust them (;)), but I'd like to see for myself. If I can sort it out I'll maybe create a pdf and post, if it's possible.

    Mendel,

In the USian models, the maintenance schedule is in a separate "Warranty and Maintenance" guide available here.
    Toyota Parts and Service

i would still like a simple chart, but at least this one lists what needs to be done at each mileage intervals.

Hopefully you can find something similar for your GWN Prii.

Is it in your warranty document?

    Hi xs650,

Oh yeah, I've found that document, at least the Canadian version. The pdf in the link you provided has a pamphlet that does break it down by 6 months interval. I'll download and compare to the Canadian version.

    Thanks.
