Whenever I am listening to an audio device, like a phone or MP3 player, via the AUX connection, and I plug the device into a 12v outlet to charge, I get a loud buzzing noise. It matches the ICE in frequency, for example when I accelerate the static noise "ticks" increase in frequency, like it's picking up the engine cylinders firing. When the ICE shuts off, the static persists but it's not as loud. I've used many different devices and both the console and dash 12v outlets with the same result. I've tried many different car chargers- high quality, low quality, and even an Energizer battery charger with a USB port, but the noise always comes through. Is there a solution for this? Or perhaps is there some "power cleaner" accessory I can purchase that isolates this noise from the outlet?
It sounds like you have a "ground loop." If you can find a charger that isolates the 12V ground from the MP3 player ground it will probably solve the problem. You can make one easily with a DC-DC converter (cheap on eBay) if you're into a little wiring. Richard
Is that common, or does that indicate electrical problems with the vehicle that I should get checked out?
Something like this?: Ground Loop Isolator - RadioShack.com The only problem is that it's RCA, while the AUX and player are mini-headphone jack. I would need a bunch of adapters. Edit: I found some that are 3.5mm-http://www.amazon.com/dp/product/B001EAQTRI?tag=priuschatcom-20
there was a TSB from Toyota for this, ( TSB-0067-08) but they likely won't do it for free since your car is out of warranty.. It adds a capacitor inline to isolate the ground. Basically what everyone else is saying. http://priuschat.com/forums/toyota-prius-service-bulletins-tsbs/46700-noise-aux-port-06-08-a.html
It's common on the Prius. The Toyota TSB installs an ground loop isolator. You can do the same yourself. Tom
