When we think of wars in our times, our minds turn to Iraq and Afghanistan. But the bigger war is the war against the planet. This war has its roots in an economy that fails to respect ecological and ethical limits - limits to inequality, limits to injustice, limits to greed and economic concentration.
A handful of corporations and of powerful countries seeks to control the earth's resources and transform the planet into a supermarket in which everything is for sale. They want to sell our water, genes, cells, organs, knowledge, cultures and future.
The richer we get, the poorer we become ecologically and culturally. The growth of affluence, measured in money, is leading to a growth in poverty at the material, cultural, ecological and spiritual levels

Stephen Colbert on The Colbert Report once did a piece where he took an adversarial stance against nature...he had a line where he said..."Mother Nature started this fight, I think it's about time we ended it".

It was funny but like most comedy it had a big element of unspoken truth to it.

I think it likely someday the war against this planet does end...unfortunately most likely with no winners....

Why should we end our war against the Earth when we're winning and the Earth is losing? Everybody knows the best time to kick your opponent is when he's down.

I think that if we continue applying pressure long enough Earth will be open for negotiations.

It isn't a war against the earth, it is a war against our children.
The earth will go merrily along orbiting the sun. It will have ice ages and warm periods. Extinction events don't bother it as some form of life always finds a way to survive and thrive once all its competition is extinct.

Conserving the current environment (or better yet, the environment we had a century ago) is for the benifit of our civilization, not earth.
Wage war on on civilization if you wish, I prefer to do my best to leave both our environment and civilization better than when I arrived.

This reminds me of one of my favorite quotes:

"It is not necessary to change. Survival is not mandatory."

The incoming Republican Speaker of the House said recently that alternative energy doesn't work and subsidies will end, and that environmental protection kills jobs. So humanity, in the US at least, may 'win' the war against the planet in the next two years.

The answer is that it may be too late. I don't see human nature changing in the immediate future. What has worked well for many years may end up being our undoing. As one poster said it isn't really a war against the earth, it is a war against ourselves. However, it is also a war against many sentient lifeforms which share this planet with us. We are killing, using, and destroying other species at an unprecedented rate. Tigers in the wild will probably become extinct in our lifetimes. Extinction is forever.
One aspect of the answer is education. Those who see what is happening can help to inform and educate others. People who have children and grandchildren and those who have no children can help. Also those who care can focus on consuming less resources and creating less waste. IMHO it is a fight worth fighting. It is a David and Goliath battle- but remember who won that fight?

Nope. Definitely a fight to the death: We're going for the kill, as fast as we can.

Fair enough... perhaps you can take it a little further and make suggestions on how things could be made better and improve stewardship of the Earth.

The Sun will win when it goes into its red giant death throes and scorches the inner planets into lifeless cinders, then swallows the innermost planets.

But that is a very long way off. We have plenty of time to raise our technology level and take off on journeys to fresh resources. Whether or not we are capable of surviving long enough to reach that technology and ability before murdering or poisoning ourselves into extinction is another matter.

I don't have all the answers. I'm just one person that is concerned about the direction of human activity. The lifestyle of Americans is not sustainable. Now other countries are aspiring to this lifestyle.
There are well known ways to reduce impact such as recycling, reusing, use less. Don't use herbicides and pesticides. Buy organic foods when possible. They are grown without chemicals. Support alternative, less polluting energy. Drive a Prius instead of a car that gets 15 mpg. Walk or cycle instead of driving a car. Use public transportation. Eat less meat or eat no meat. Raising and slaughtering animals for human consumption uses far more energy and creates much more pollution than a vegetarian diet. Google "factory farming". Think about what you consume and the waste you produce. Contribute to charities and organizations that are working on these problems. This is not a complete list. I am always open to new ideas. I know that there are people that will ridicule these ideas but that is what I support.

. . . . and if the tide turns, we can always implement the "scorched earth" policy ... oh wait ... we're already doing that.

    ;)
