Once last summer, after I pulled my car into the garage in the late morning, I got out forgetting to turn off the car ( I only punched park). Since I did not try to lock the car there was no warning signal, and in the daylight I didn't notice the panel lights on. Of course there was no noise.

I closed the garage and entered the house.

That evening, when I entered the garage to go out to dinner, I was shocked to see that the temperature in the garage was over 110F, and there was a weird odor (strange since CO and Co2 are both odorless). I opened every window, and aired the house and attic out after we returned from dinner. My CO monitor in the house was on and the pilot light on the water heater (in the garage) was out, but we lived to see another day. The garage is attached to the house, and the CO appears to have intruded through the attic.

I took the car to the dealer the next day, and they reset something (if the garage was 110F -- the car must have been much hotter).

I have heard of some cars having Idiot Lights, but the Prius really needs a Driver Idiot Light.

    ...a word to wise...

I wonder, when will be the first owner to kill themselves or someone else, accidently or not, in this way? Will their heirs try to sue Toyota for it?

sue toyota? sheesh. that's like suing kenmore for making an oven that you burned yourself on...

user negligence. i can't imagine any success there.

i always lock the car when i leave it, but i don't have a garage.

I'm guessing you don't have the Smart Key System (SKS). If I get out of my car without turning it off and close the door, assuming the fob is in my pocket, then the car goes "beep... beep... beep".

Won't it beep, beep, beep if the car is left on even with non-sks where the fob is in the slot?

Oh wait. There is no outside buzzer if you don't have SKS. But the inside one should beep once.

Isn't it supposed to lock the fob in the slot if the car is still powered on? I guess one could be in the habit of leaving their keys in the ignition when the car is in their own garage... but something here isn't right.

I agree, this isn't passing the 'sniff test' No way a non-running Prius is going to generate enough heat to raise the temp like that. Nor is it going to produce enough CO to trigger whole house alarms.

I suppose it's possible that it was running continuously if the defrost was left on or something. But even then I doubt it would create the problem described.

None-the-less, the take home point is a good one...be careful to shut down completely and take your key inside.

    Sounds like a bogus story.

If you have SKS, it will beep if you try to walk away from the car with the fob if the car is still on. It will be quite obvious unless you're deaf.

If you don't have SKS, you start the car with the fob inserted, and it won't let go of the fob until you turn off the car.

It's also hard to miss the speedo/MFD being still on.

Now, I agree it's better to have a stateful interface that doesn't leave you confused where the car is in, eg the rotating key inserted interface.

I have turned the car off without hitting park a few times by accident. I don't think it's even necessary since the times I didn't push Park it still lit up for a second after powering down. So I'm guessing it automaticly goes into park if you just push Power off.

That is correct. It automatically "Parks" when you power off. The park button is handy if you want to park without turning off, but not needed otherwise.

It's /way/ better than it forcing you to hit park before shutting off. Great work Toyota!

If you hit the Power button and watch the Park button, the light comes on briefly. Hitting the Power button is the best way to make sure your Prius is off....

Same here - now I have a bad habit of trying to remove the key from conventional cars while it's still in Drive  Then I remember I'm in a primitive vehicle and actaully have to put it in Park to shut down.

    Cheers,
    Jeff

I agree. Especially considering this was their first post.. I sat outside in summer with AC running for over an hour and the car ran for 1 minute at a time every 5 - 10 minutes. I can't imagine that being enough to heat up a garage OR set off any CO2 detectors.

Anyway, while the car may be very quiet when it's running, it makes a bit more noise when you turn it off. I can always tell I've shut it off, since I can hear the pump filling the bottle with coolant.

    I forgot to add..

parked in the garage and it was still to bright to see the panels lit up? What about the MFD? Any garage I've ever been in has been pretty dim regardless of the time of day.

oh.. and as nushrike said, with sks, you'd get warning beep. Without, you'd have to take key out of ignition.

<_< Not quite. An oven's purpose is to get hot.

You might consider suing Kenmore if your oven started careening out of control or killed you by deploying its airbag in an inappropriate situation. ;)

<_< I can think of no situation which would justify a car risking combustion through user error.

well it's not toyota's fault you left your car on...

just like noone would sue ford for killing their family members when they left their escort running in the garage...

americans are lawsuit-happy and it's rather irritating.

<_< All the same, not every lawsuit is frivolous.
    Not even those by Americans.
