Cap is 232xx without any adjustment, 12K mi/yr.

I didn't remember the costs over the yearly mileage since that's enough for me.

Speaking of Tar Babies and Briar Patches... I'm gonna' try that... tell 'em I want a Silver, or whatever color they don't have, and see if they'll give me $1000 off a Blizzard Pearl :pound:

Seriously? $208 a month for a III? Tell me more- might be worth the drive up to San Jose.

Picking mine up later this week. Prius III, red, no nav, auto-dimming/Homelink mirror, full floor mat set.

    MSRP: $25395
    Discount: $1678
    Trade-in: $2500 (fair I think)
    Net: $21,217
    NC tax: $636
    Stupid fees: $559
    NC fees: $87
Out-the-door (after taxes and discount): $22,500

I think I did not do so hot on the deal...got about 6.6% off MSRP :( I did also get 0%/60 months, 90 days no payments, 2 years of maintenance.

Hi folks! My first post here after finding PC a few days ago. What a great site! I hope to be a part of it as I plan on getting a Prius real soon. :D

This is my first time buying a new car so any tips about dealing with the dealer are appreciated. After an initial contact with the dealers here in Austin via email, my lowest offer for a II with just mats and XM radio is $22,133. I figured this dealer would have the lowest because they currently offer $2,500 off (original price $24,633).

I haven't confirmed (he hasn't responded yet) but I believe I should also be able to apply the current Toyota rebate of $1,000, bringing the price down to $21,133 + TT&L.

Does this sound like a good number, considering I have yet to haggle? (I still will of course.) My TrueCar eval is below.

Edmunds' True Market Value came up with $22,140.

How much lower do you think I will be able to go?
    Thanks so much!

Hi jayrider. I'm not sure what you mean by "try" them. If you notice, I did include a screen shot from the pricing chart I got using truecar in my post.

If you mean you used truecar's pricing guides in your negotiations, what price were you able to get in relation to the "dealer's price" or "average price paid"?

Best thing to do is mass e-mail all the dealerships within a reasonable distance and determine if they have what you want (trim, color, options, etc). Then pit them against one another is a sort of e-mail auction. After you have narrowed it down to the salesmen who have what you want on the lot, and are willing to deal, visit the dealerships on the last day of the month and start the negotiations. Use the TrueCar price as the starting point.

Don't stick around, tell them you have an appointment at another dealership and leave. Do the same at the next dealership. Stay in contact via phone with the salesmen and when one gets to a price you are comfortable with, tell them to write it up and you come in to finalize the deal...

This is how I purchased my 2010 Prius III w/Nav for $22,088 on 31 July...

Thanks! It was truly a situation where the offer was one I couldn't refuse! I think one thing that really put me at an advantage was the fact I still was not totally sure I wanted a Prius, so I guess I came off as having an indifferent attitude. After having it for a few months now, I'm glad it worked out the way it did, we're quite happy with it!

That does sound pretty sweet Paul. Nice work.

Also, thanks for the advice. I read similar ideas before, but I'm still not clear on how you actually mediate the bidding war via email. I mean like what wording do you use in the emails...

So, after you email them all saying what you want, when you start getting quotes are you blunt and just say to dealer A: "Dealer B has you beat on a similar package by this much, can you beat him?"

Also I'm curious, did you get down to that price totally via email? Or close to it and then got a little extra when you went in?

RonRon--I started with the "mass emails" and then switched over to phone quotes. Over the phone I could tell which dealerships were going to be fair and which ones weren't. The one I ended up buying my Prius II from gave me the exact Internet quote that I got from another dealership.

Also--you wrote: I haven't confirmed (he hasn't responded yet) but I believe I should also be able to apply the current Toyota rebate of $1,000, bringing the price down to $21,133 + TT&L.

That's a very good deal if you can get it. I got my Prius II (Blizzard Pearl w/ the mats but no XM radio) for 21,111 + TT&L. That was at the end of August.

Good luck getting the very best deal...and don't be afraid to just get up and walk away if you don't like how things are going!
