I had to replace all my windshield wiper blades. All the books at the auto stores do not list a size for the rear hatch blade. I went out to look at it, and it's kind of a strange animal. The blade does not easily bend backwards to replace the wiper, and the connection is a bit odd. I can't believe this hasn't come up in the forum before. I did a search and couldn't find anything on the subject unless I'm using wrong key words or something. Has anybody else replaced the rear windshield wiper blade? Where did you find one? I just did a quick little inspection on removal of the wiper, but it doesn't seem common place.

I found this: http://john1701a.com/prius/documents/Prius...iper-Blades.pdf This helps with getting the thing off, but is the only way you can replace this blade is by replacing the rubber with the thin metal spine? The part listed is a Toyota part. Bosch or other companies don't make replacements? Why?

I had an unused wiper refill for a vehicle I no longer own. It was the same overall blade, but a little longer. I removed the bad blade from the rear wiper and cut this one to length. Then I slid it back in place of the other blade. It works fine and saved me the $40 that I was quoted for a replacement by Toyota.....

I got an entire replacement arm so that you can use a standard wiper blade. TI got it from Sigma motors, a link should be on Priuschat somewhere. The stock blade is retarded. I now have a full 20" blade which works great.

I got my blade from the Toyota dealer, price was not unreasonable. But, as others mention, it might be worth while to replace the whole wiper part with something a little bigger if you'd like a bigger cleared area. I could count on one hand the number of times I've used that rear wiper in the 4 years with my Prius.

I use the wiper seldom as well, but the rubber was tearing off of the existing one. I don't want to scratch the window if I ever needed to use it. It just seemed to me that it's a little crazy to have to go to Toyota to replace a winshield wiper blade. I'll look to see if the larger one is an economical/practical decision.

I just replaced all of my '05 Prius wiper inserts. I like replacing only the rubber (and steel spring bands) because it's most cost efficient and I can usually get the Trico brand that I like best. The Trico refill set (2 inserts) 47-600 does both the rear AND passenger wipers. It's a "break-to-fit type that takes a little mechanical ability, but not too much. Then, Trico refill set 45-280 which is over 26 inches long (so you have to use a pair of dykes to score and break [by bending] the steel bands) does the drivers side. This approach using a sharp razor blade to cut the rubber does a fine job for slightly over $10 complete. I got my refills at Advance Auto Parts in the Cincinnati Ohio area. I hope this helps some folks out there. :)

I just replaced the rubber on my rear wiper for $9 from Toyota. Couldn't find anyone in the area that stocked just the rubber.

I had good luck getting OEM blades from Conicelli partznet online for the two front wipers and the rear. The total for all three was $10.20 (there was a free shipping special at the time for the larger order that I placed with them).
I think there is also a coupon code good through October ("partznet5") that will give 5% off an order of $50-$125.
I'm just a satisfied customer with no other relationship. :)

Part number Part Description Quantity Price Total
    8521447010 , Refill 1 $2.64 $2.64
    8521446011 , Refill Right 1 $3.04 $3.04
    8521444140 , Refill Left 1 $4.52 $4.52

I was bringing in my '07 Prius for recall work and asked the man who signed me in whether it would cost anything to install the rear wiper blade. He offered that if I went to Parts right then and picked it up, he would put it in for me.

I had planned to replace the whole insert, which I had been told by phone was around $16, but when waiting at the Parts desk I saw a sign for replacement blades and asked if they had them. Yes, was the answer, and it cost me $5.18 plus tax.

The man installed it for me before they even brought my car into the service area. I had to go back to finish paying for the blade, but since he needed some tools to replace the blade into the holder, I had a chance to see how the wiper arm was constructed.

The first thing I saw was that the wiper arm was sitting vertically to the window, just like you can do with front wipers, something which I didn't think it could do. Turns out that there is a plastic molding at the base of the arm (at the pivot point of the whole assembly... near the motor) which can be taken off. Taking this piece off allows the arm to be raised off the window for servicing. I didn't see him take it off, but it snapped back on by being pushed straight on. And the frame that holds the blade snaps off and on, as well.

    I hope this is helpful.

Actually there was a helpful hint way back in time (like 4 years ago) that covered this also. The black plastic cover at the base of the back window wiper can be pulled off, and on the inside there's a tab sticking down. If you break off this tab and put the cover back on, then the wiper can be lifted off vertically (and stays in place) just like the front windshield wipers. I did this years ago and it's been working great. Definitely helpful when washing my windows when refilling my gas tank (can't be wasting time then, because it's hard to do all the windows before 8 gallons is pumped :) ).

    hope this helps

Good Tip. I remember next time when I change my wiper insert.
I changed my rear wiper insert last year. I didn't pull back the blade. I cheated by clipping a little on the top tab(wiper blade) and pull the insert up and out. Then I did the reverse to put he new insert back in. (Remember the insert's rubber end clips on to one to the ends on the wiper blade.) Cost me $4 for the refill at my dealership.

$75 is a little much for a replacement arm for me.. I wish someone had a cheaper solution to a bigger blade.

You CAN just replace the blade (not just the rubber part). I stopped down at my local O'Reilly Auto Parts and asked the guy behind the counter for help. He followed me out to my car and showed me how to take the plastic part at the base of the arm off then you can bend the arm back enough to take off the blade. Then he sold me a Trico 16A that is an exact replacement for my OEM blade for $10.

you answered a question that was posted over 6 months ago, if it was really important he would have asked it again or started a new thread.

There's nothing wrong with giving life to an old thread if its an interesting topic, but the rear wiper?!?!?

The Trico 16A is a drop-in replacement for the rear wiper.

Just pop off the rubber boot at the base of the wiper, and pull the wiper arm away form the rear windshield.

The wiper assembly pops down off the arm. The new assembly pops back on (there's a latch at the base of the connector that you may need to depress). Let the wiper arm down onto the windshield and replace the rubber boot at the base of the arm.

    Good to go.

To replace the rear wiper blade:
There is a black cover at base of wiper.
Pull out on sides and lift up. It will pop off.
Raise entire arm up away from glass until it locks.
Rotate bottom end of wiper blade away from arm, then slide blade out of notch.
    Reverse to install.
