I'm looking to travel with a tandem. I'm looking for advice from people who use trunk racks (not hitches or roof racks) or the interior of the 2010 model to carry a tandem. Any advice out there?
I take our tandem places with the Prius. But it is a 2006... and I use a trailer. So I'm not really answering your question, sorry.
I think that is a pretty cool trailer - looks very light weight, small wheels, and you in theory could bolt on your camping gear.... Can you provide details (cost MFG etc)? EDIT: Also, is it a 2"???
The trailer is a SportsRig. It's not cheap, but it is very well engineered and tows very well: SportsRig Micro Trailers: Kayak Trailer. Bike Trailers. Lightweight trailer for kayaks, bikes, canoes, cargo, camping gear, boats, storage boxes. Manufacturer and dealer. USA Made trailers for your vehicle. Eco-friendly trailers for fuel efficiency. Tom
Unless the tandem is equipped with SKS couplers so that you could take it apart, I doubt that it would be possible to carry a tandem inside a 2010 Prius. I remember an aquaintance that mounted a trunk rack on the Mazda Miata and carried their tandem that way. They always removed the wheels, otherwise the tandem stuck out to far on each side of the car (the worry was that someone would only see the car and not see the tandem wheels...) Based on their experiences, my advice would be to not use a trunk rack. We have a Yakima roof rack and have used it successfully for 20 years now on several different vehicles. If I wasn't using a roof rack, I'd go with the trailer (as shown in early posts). Just curious, why the specific interest in a trunk rack?
We have this on the roof rack of our Subaru: TandemMount R4 It works very well. It has a telescoping tray so it can carry a normal sized bike and a tandem.
