    Just wondering......

If an oil change is performed on a Prius, it is typical to perform an RPM check on most vehicles - this is to say that the RPM is raised to pressure the oil filter and check for leaks.

As the Prius, does not engauge the gas engine until 80Km's - does this require a road test to check that pressure is sufficient? or is there a way to do this without road testing the vehicle?

Is priming the filter prior recommended as well, to avoid vapor or air locks at that speed, when the gas engine engauges?

    Inquiring mind wants to know.......

You mean you want to start the ICE to check for leaks, right?

Get into the car and Power On. Wait until it goes to Ready. Then floor the gas pedal. The ICE should instantly start. Once it starts, take your foot off the gas pedal and the ICE will return to its usual "idle" speed. It won't sit there screaming away.

You can then go out to check for leaks.

If the engine is cold, the engine will start in about 5-10 seconds after the ready mode is lit to heat up the cat. converter.

I really hate that "oil done, rev it up" action that a lot of quick lube places conduct. It isn't necessary and frankly doesn't indicate anything. If you have put everthing back and it has been tightened appropriately, an RPM test isn't going to do anything for you.

So, if you are at a quick lube place and they want you to rev it up, just tell them no you can't because it is a Hybrid and leave it at that. Why burn the gas for no purpose on a "test" which is meaningless?

Go into READY, floor the BRAKE, then push down on the accelerator until the engine engages. The Prius won't go anywhere, and so it will start spinning the gas engine and charge the battery.

Best to do this when you're at low battery when it's easier to spin up the engine.

You would want to pressurize oil pressure to the oil filter to check for leaks. After all, it was replaced, right?

Necessary operating oil pressure (for lack of a better way to describe it) is right there at idle. Oil pressure will increase at higher RPM, but if you are leaking at idle, you are definitely going to leak at higher RPM. So, turning on the Prius and letting it go through its startup idle should be enough.

I suppose I've changed too much oil in my rather short life to this point, however starting a car after changing the oil is a must. Revving it up is not necessary. Then again I always follow the tightening instructions for oil filters. They are on tight and are not too difficult to get off when you have to change the oil in the future.
