I've been upgrading the JBL in my V and have done the following to date: - Replaced the front and rear door speakers with Infinity Reference speakers - Installed Dynamat Extreme on the 4 doors - JL Audio Cleansweep processor w/ signal summing interface installed under passenger seat - Alpine PDX-5 amp installed in rear cargo area I wanted to retain the JBL HU but upgrade the sound. I'm very happy with the results. Now I need to add a sub to the mix and I'm struggling with finding the right sub and the right location. I frequently fold down one or both of the rear seats so I'm not wild about the idea of having to detach the sub all the time (as well as losing the cargo space when it is in place). I was thinking I may be able fit a slim/shallow sub in the rear cargo area next to the Alpine amp. Would this work? I'm concerned that since this is a covered area, the sub may not work correctly. Any advice would be appreciated.
Nothing is going to sound perfect. The best sound/space compromise is likely a custom enclosure over the battery with a single 10" sub. Next is would be that sub that is detachable in the cargo area. I have mine Velcroed down, and I know that is kind of ghetto, but I can move it further back if I need the seats folded down and cargo room contiguous. I can also remove it, but haven't done that yet. The next option is a thin 10" or 12" in the area where your amp is. This should sound fine. The cavity will cause a little distortion but you should still get good bass. The only real drawback is the thin subs often don't sound as good as normal depth ones. JL and Pioneer seem to have some good slimline choices. I went cheap with a basslink, so you are likely to get a better sub than I have. You already have an amp for the sub so why not try out a slim line from a place with a good return policy. Try it, and return it if its not good enough.
Drop it in the plastic bin in the cargo bay. Velcor for easy removal. Sounds great does not take up more than 10 inches in space. Easy to install. Good Luck Best Regards, Jim
I installed the Infinity Basslink and it is removable. Check out my install at --> http://priuschat.com/forums/gen-iii-2010-prius-audio-electronics/75574-complete-audio-upgrade.html I secured the sub with two bungee cords to the cargo buckle. I just unplug 4 wires or I left enough slack in the wires where I can move the sub around. This works out great.
ABL: What type of sub are you talking about? Every sub with an enclosure I've found is too big for the space.

I have one, and it's fine for a "fill" (40-60 hz) but don't expect to "rock the house" with it. I don't like "thump-thump" bass like you hear coming from all the kid's cars around here...
Yup, also enough bass for me. I have it under the passenger seat and I still have full cargo capability.
