This is my first post, but I have read hundreds here. I have been looking at the cars for years and finally pulled the trigger on a 2008 with 23k miles. It does not have the nav package like I would like, but it does have the Aux input which I can live with, as myself and my wife both have Iphones and the touchscreen screen wouldn't be a huge upgrade over just using the phone. My thought was to take the center console apart, drill holes and run the power and aux cables under it into the front cup holder (which looks perfect for an Iphone/ipod holder). My question is has anyone done this before and are there any tips or guides on how to do this without ripping something apart and regretting it later? I was actually considering the center cup holder light mod while I am at it, but figure it might get a bit annoying eventually. Thanks ahead of time John, new Prius owner and LOVING the 45mpg!
I have run the Aux cable to the cubby hole below the radio. I also tapped the 12V outlet in front and put a USB/12V charger unit in there as well. With the lid opened, I can place my iPhone sideway on the lid, plug in the Aux cable and the USB charging cable at the same time. Or, I can place the phone in the cup holder with audio cable but without charging cable. (We have two iPhones too). I didn't want to use the cup holder as a charge/docking station since we use them to hold coffee cups, so I didn't try that route. But it should be doable, IMO.
I ended up using the Griffin Technology gooseneck charging cradle. I tapped into the front outlet and ran a powerpoint to the left of the dash. I fed the cradle, since it dismantles, through the empty ports next to the dash dimmer light. It allows the iPhone to sit upright in the cradle and charges it as well.
I've got an 08 and an iPhone too. I decided to just burn a disc full of MP3's rather than deal with wires. Do you want to do this mainly for the music? So I've got a disc full of MP3's and the Bluetooth that connects to the phone in my pocket, so I don't really see a need for the connections and wires unless I need to charge the phone...
