I drove my new '05-BC on Seattle's tired freeways yesterday and immediately developed a persistant rattle under the dash. It continued when I got back on decent road surface. Has anyone experienced such a rattle and, if so, can you tell me what it was? I'd like to give the dealer a place to look. Sorry for the typo in the title. Can't edit that. Thanks all, Patrick
Where exactly is it? I have recently developed one that sounds like it's coming from the glovebox or the vent next to it. Can't figure out how to make it shut up.
"Where exactly is it? I have recently developed one that sounds like it's coming from the glovebox or the vent next to it. Can't figure out how to make it shut up." Mine seems to be the skin of plastic covering the top glovebox compartment....pushing down on it stops the noise. I'm not certain if it is possible to remove the skin and put something underneath to stop this.

i have had several rattles and all were just loose stuff in one of the glove boxes that was cured by shifting stuff around. i can identify with your situation since i have probably experienced many of the roads you speak of. i will say that being in Olympia, i have the advantage of being in the state capital and therefore being near the people that control the highway funds and our roads are 10 times better than yours and for the most part, you Seattlelites pay for it.
Ditto that most of my rattles were just loose things, often in unexpected places. I still have the dreaded creak under the speedo. Someday I'll probably stuff a piece of tape or soft plastic up there to stop it.
I also have a buzzing noise in the dash when I'm on the freeway. And the dash has buckled up a bit over the glovebox so that the top lid won't open all the way.
That happened to me on the drive home from the dealer. I figured a piece of electricial tape would cure it. Then I saw the right side wasn't in right. I got some rubbery material from a hardware store that's designed to be put in tool boxes and used that in the center drawer. It keeps the stuff from sliding around. I've seen stuff like it (although thinner and in different colors) in the housewares section of stores.
WOW!! that really sucks... is this a heat related issue? when i lived in Riverside, CA (45 mins North of Palm Springs and only slightly cooler) i had two different cars where the dashboard cracked from the heat. sunshades didnt do much good there.
I found my center speaker in the dash rattled. I lifted it up and out from the back (plastic hooks grab under the dash nearest the windshield) and put some black electrical tape on the edge of the dash where the hooks and clips are supposed to grab. It's tight now and no rattle anymore. I though of electrical tape since that's what I used in the upper glove box, over the ridges on the sides, that the tray slides onto. The thickness of the soft black tape is enough to eliminate the jiggle and rattle.
2 weeks ago I got a rattle, I have NO idea why, but it turned out to be the handle for adjusting the steering wheel. The left screw was fairly loose, the right one a little loose. I'm guessing the left one had been loose for some time given it needed 3 full turns to tighten it back up. The right screw only needed 1/4 to 1/2 turn. The location was pinpointed by both my wife and I discussing where we THOUGHT it sounded like it was coming from. I was driving and she was sure it was coming from my left side. To me, it sounded center or right and below the top of the dash. Since I knew it wasn't on my left and she knew it wasn't on her immediate left, the possible locations were narrows substantially.
Probably the ONLY thing I don't like about my Pri. The friggin' DASH CREAKING is ANNOYING. I gotta try what Bill pulled off... Thanks Bill!
I have a cold weather rattle of th dash, 4 inhes in front of the glove box. I push straight down and it stops. Only rattles on very rough roads when cold.
"I have a cold weather rattle of th dash, 4 inhes in front of the glove box." Sounds like the area of the airbag. If it's under warrantee, I'd take it in and have them check the AB is mounted correctly.
my rattle was in the dash, right in front of me and before the speedo. if you pushed on the dash, it gave a bit. dealer found that the brace beneath the dash was broken (or something like that) and replaced it. this was over a year ago. others have seen the glove box, speaker baffle and more as sources of their annoying rattle. when they fixed mine, the sun came out once again
