    RedRock,

Your kind comments are both humbling and very encouraging to me. I SO appreciate you taking both the time to look through the blog and then to post your comment here on line. It truly brings a smile to my face and inspires me to keep shooting. I hope you will continue to enjoy following the trip.

    Thanks again,
    Ian

Ian, your apology toward the end of your Zion blog about not taking many shots is made completely unnecessary by the superb panoramic shot from the top of the Angel's Landing Trail. I hope you will post the photos you take on this trip on a website with a larger audience. This site is visited almost exclusively by Prius owners and your photos deserve much wider exposure.

Despite the promise of the fantastic view, I was unable to go this far.

Thanks for showing what I missed.

It's too bad the nervous rangers didn't direct you to the large campground that is only a mile or two from the visitor center. I have been to Death Valley 5 or 6 times and the Rangers have always been courteous, enthusiastic and helpful, but they weren't stressed at the time.

I'm glad you were able to come back and enjoy the beauty of Death Valley, and even happier that my pictures of Artists Palate are better than yours.:D There hasn't been one other picture you have shown that I would dare say I could have come close to matching.

Your photography is fantastic, I have been to a good share of the places you have photographed on your journey and your work is simply outstanding:cool:

Thank you for reminding me of those beautiful places I have seen.

I've not seen it mentioned anywhere... what camera is being used to get these shots? because I really want one ;).

As seen below in this crappy picture from my iPhone, my big case is holding my Canon 5d mk ii with my 100-400 f4.5-5.6 L, 16-35 f2.8 ii, 24-105 f4L, 50 f1.4, Rebel t2i and 18-55 f3.5. You'll also see my juicedlink xlr audio adapter for when I shoot video. Additionally, I use a variable ND filter to get some long exposure shots when shooting water/etc.

Honestly though, it's not about the camera. It's about LIGHT, and catching light at the right time in the right way. I've seen people get INCREDIBLE pictures from p&s cameras. Basically, the more expensive the gear, the more EASE of USE and control. But it doesn't "make better pictures". As in a story a german photog recently related to me, the punchline mentioned that a good cook doesn't need really good pots and pans, it's how you use them.

Um, can I have your babies?

It's more than just lighting - it's also the glass. Good camera with a full CMOS (like your Canon), and good lenses.

Even a great cook needs SOME tools in the kitchen to produce with!

True. I just meant for that to be an encouragement to not feel like you need an expensive camera to go out and shoot pictures. If you keep shooting, keep refining, and keep looking for light, you'll get great pictures and have tons of fun along the way. Taking pictures, to me, is all about the fun of capturing the beauty this world has to offer :)

    Peace

    Ian,

I love love love your pics. I just returned from a National Park Tour in my 04 Prius (37,000 miles in 6 months). Your pictures take me back to that wonderful sense of amazement and peace I felt in those places. Too bad I didn't know about your trip earlier, we may have been able to meet up while on the road.

    I use sleeping pad
when camping alone and use sun shade socks for some privacy and open window slighly
. I have no back pains and bugs while sleeping, temperature on the other hand depends on the location Prius v parked.

After I just got the 'itch' to take my wife camping (after 31 years), I'm here to try to learn the ropes. I learned a lot when I 1st joined back in 2006. Then On my wife's birthday in 2012 I got my DREAM MACHINE. No kidding. Well nice pick. Enjoy your trips. Regards, DonTaylor
