Any reason to NOT own 2 Prius's

I can imagine a two Prius family having a *lot* of problems. What happens if the new Prius starts to belittle the older one ?

We have two, SWMBO liked my 2010 Gen 3 so much when I went to pick it up that she bought a 2006 Gen 2 at the same time.
I was thinking of buying a Gen 1 too, so we would have the complete set ;0)

I have a 2003 Prius for commuting and 'experimental purposes.' The other is my wife's car for trips around and out of town.

Well this is actually not true: while you are not allowed to jumpstart a regular ICE-only vehicle with your prius, there's nothing wrong with jumpstarting another prius :rockon:

 

I don't know any, quite the opposite. My wife and I have owned 2 Prius' since Feb 2002. We only sold 1 of them to "upgrade" to our 2004 model. They have been THE best new cars AND old cars we've ever owned! Any they've jumped each other many, many times.

 

After we got ours I liked it so much I regretted the 18k we got a little and wish I'd just bought two 12k priuses instead. Then we went camping with our kids recently and...yep, still happy I have a minivan. The Prius is fine for most people and its hatchbacking is nice but there may be times when its small size will be a problem. Look back over the past few years and see how often you need large room, then you'll know how tolerable its stature is.

Believe it or not the mockery from neighbors will probably increase by THREE TIMES if you are a two-prius family, though. That's just how the math works out.

I think the answer is pretty simple. It comes down to reasons you would want two of anything, Prius or otherwise. Do you NEED two Prius. If having two vehicles...is something beneficial, affordable that you want in your life...then certainly there is no problem with having Two Prius...if you're a family, with concievably different destinations and demands on personal transportation...then two Prius is a perfectly legitimate choice.

To me, owning two Prius would be a waste....but I'm NOT a family with two kids....

To me "personal transportation" comes down to what you need. If your family operates better having two or more vehicles, and you can afford to own and operate two or more vehicles then obviously owning two Prius would be more "efficient" than Owning 1 Prius and a Mustang.....

But....I admit, I like Mustangs...if I was going to allow myself to own something that makes no real economic, ecological or social sense....it might be a Mustang....

There...that sounds confusing....but in general, Yeah, why do you have to ask? If you need two vehicles and want them both to be Prius, I don't think that should be a problem for anyone...

 

Great idea jimbo. In the 3 priuses I have owned I have used my jump box 4 times to boost my battery.
The funny part is I got the jump box to use primarily as a portable laptop and cell phone charger for camping trips.

The last 4 camping trips We have been with a group where someone sprung for power. So i have not needed it.

 

As long as you're a responsible owner and spay or neuter I see no problem.

 

I got first in March, liked it so much got a second late May. I have never before owned a Prius or even a hybrid, and couldn't be happier. That said, they meet my family's needs as I only have 1 child. Good luck whatever your decision!

 

We had two Priuses until a few months ago when we decided to sell the 2007 to eliminate the time and expense of maintaining a third vehicle. DH thinks we need to keep our SUV for long trips (he just doesn't think the Prius is roomy enough) and we also haul a utility trailer to the dump and rent heavy equipment occasionally. Everybody's needs are different.

 

OK--obviously it comes down to you and your family's specific needs, but here are a few possible needs that MIGHT, under the right circumstances, make you change your mind about a second Prius:

1. Sure you don't need higher clearance on one vehicle? Any kids to take camping on rutted National Forest roads?

2. Hey, you say you're from upstate NY. Yet you say you don't need AWD. What DO you do in the winter? Remember that Prius does NOT come with a heat ray to melt all that snow in front of it as it moves (even as an option), so are you absolutely sure you don't want a Subaru Forester?

3. You want the four passenger car with absolutely the lowest total cost of ownership. At current gas prices that's still probably something like the Corolla, and you could go even further into econobox land if you wanted.


So, unless you have one of these specific needs, or another one, I see no reason NOT to get another Prius.

 

Not really a problem. I've heard of Prius owners getting screwed by their dealers, but I've never heard of one Prius screwing another.

I am on my 2nd Prius after the first one was totaled by an inattentive driver who hit it while it was parked.

Seriously consider your needs before having two of the same car. I have the Prius and my wife drives the V8 4Runner. She drives very little, so the fuel consumption is a non issue.

I like having the SUV around for towing or just hauling stuff that will not fit in the Prius. We also like to go to the beach here, I would not even think about taking the Prius down on the beach.

It's nice having the 4 wheel drive in the winter, or during hunting season. I tow a trailer pretty often.

I guess it's all about needs, two Prioria might work for you, it won't work for me.

Consider it carefully. The Prius is a truly great car, if you ONLY need cars, go for it.
