I searched other threads, and they have been extremely unhelpful. I know many of people have installed double-din head units with screens. What else could be the purpose of those screens if you're not watching video? Anyways, i got a Pioneer AVH-P3200DVD. It has this long parking brake wire that has to be connected to the positive wire of the parking brake switch. WHERE??? a] dont tell me to ground it. I already said it needs to be connected to a 12V supply. b] Dont tell me to buy those switch bypasses on ebay. I actually plan on being safe and only watching videos when im parked. Surely there has to be somebody who installed it "properly" I dont know much about electronics. Can i just connect it to the red wire on the radio harness (the 12V switched power cable)?? Advice appreciated.
you could connect it to the switched +12, but that will bypass the brake pedal. I don't know if the prius has a sensor on the parking brake. usually they are ground based (connect to ground when the brake is on) anyhow.. if there IS a ground based sensor, then you will have to install a relay which switches +12 using the brake signal to close the relay.. the switched signal goes thru the relay on pins 87 & 30. the switching goes thu pins 85 & 86. so you would wire up +12 to 30 & 85, ground from the brake to 86. the lead from the radio to 87.. usually those leads require ground tho.. sorry, not thread hijacking, just asking a related question --- (Colonel, I know this is not what you want) if you just ground the wire will the system will work in motion? or does it need to be a (+) source? don't worry I'm not stupid enough to watch video in motion, I just want my wife to be able to program the NAV while in motion.
Parking Brake is hand/foot ratcheting brake used during parking = negative trigger Brake wire is foot pedal used to slow down the car = positive trigger The reason they supply such long wire is to anticipate the installers doing the connection at the taillight. You can catch the both parking brake and foot brake wires at the kick panel or at the switch. The parking brake is believe is green and the foot brake is blue. sometimes they have silver dots. Always use a multimeter and not test lights. Edit: The reason why some units have both + and - parking brake wires is to anticipate installing in a positive trigger parking brakes. The reason why some units have both parking brake and foot brake is to discourage bypassing the safety system. You need to hook up both foot and parking brakes so that you can do a sequence of actions to activate the video screen such as applying the foot brakes twice before parking brake.
don't worry. i guess it depends on your headunit. My manual says to hook it up to the + source, but some people have had success connecting it to a ground. My manual says that to engage the video, the parking brake has to be engaged, released, and then reengaged. So i guess attaching it to the 12V is out of the question. =( guess im getting a switch.

cause I don't think it has one.. there is no indication on the console that the parking brake is on.. it is NOT required.. | for the manufacturer to supply a parking brake signal detection wire || well, bigger idiot than I thought I was.. there is the word 'brake' right there on the console.. never mind sam

You missed the point. The poster is saying that the *Prius* doesn't have a parking brake sense wire. He bases this on not seeing an indicator light on the dash when the parking brake is set. Not having a Gen III, I cannot say whether this is correct. Your reply was about your new head unit, which is not related to the poster's comment. Tom
hm.. never saw it over there.. SO, you'd pull off the lower dash, as if doing the fog light mod, and find the wire on the pedal.. its outside the kick panel..altho u may have to remove that too.. I'll find it in a few weeks when I do all those mods.. (parts and a little cooler).. Sam
It's on the right side of the dash..... Every car has a parking brake light otherwise people would be driving with their parking brake on because they'd forget
This is what you have to do to bypass it - buy a switch and hook up that wire to one of the terminals on the switch and run another wire from the other terminal to a ground. When you want to play a DVD just hit the switch and you should be go to go, just don't use while car in in drive.

It's at the switch. Did you read post #4? This is where all the install docs tell you to go to get the friction brake and the emergency brake for all the cars, even if they're buried behind loads of other harness, plugs, junction boxes. For the friction brake wires you can sometimes catch it at the driver side kick panel if you know what color it is. You can tell what color it is by accessing the back of the taillight assembly and trace the wires to the brake lights.
