At my last dealer performed oil change, he writes "CDM front caliper service due next time".
He says something about needing to lube the front calipers .....
Is this service that should be done, or is the dealership service department looking for a chance to make money for unneeded service?
I had 15,000 miles on my 2010 Prius at that time.
If needed, is it something I can easily do myself?

LOL i have never heard of this. I have 24k and nobody said anything about it. Go ahead and read your owners manual. There is nothing about lubing the brakes. If they pressure you to do extra things that are not listed there trying to make extra money. Considering it is your brakes if the service was needed it would be listed in the manual to prevent lawsuits.

I have owned a lot of different cars and pickup trucks by a variety of manufacturers. None of them have ever had a maintenance item to lube the brakes or brake calipers.

Sounds like another dealer rip off. Ask them to show you the Toyota document that says this should be done, if they can't produce it ask them to please leave your brakes alone. If they come up with something see if you can get a copy and post it here.

I call BS. I've read the entire maintenance booklet--no mention of this, nor for any other car I've owned.

Lubrication of brake caliper slides and pad guides (anti-rattle clips) are essential to even brake pad wear/life and helps to prevent noise. I will agree however that at 15k miles this service is unnecessary. I like to do this to my personal vehicles every 30k as well as a rear clean and adjust (on vehicles with drum brakes like my old 05 Prius had). However, no need to do this to a customer vehicle unless an issue is present (noise, uneven wear, etc.) because after all, spending customers money on something that isn't needed isn't something I do, I have a conscious to deal with at the end of the day. :)

I wonder if this "service" is related to the undercarriage "clatter" issue that myself and a number of other posters are experiencing? If so, it shouldn't cost us anything. As I posted in another thread, I have personally observed this sound to go away when depressing the brakes. I believe the sound is front caliper related. My friend who is also experiencing this noise will be taking a Toyota Tech out for a drive to demonstrate/replicate the issue; apparently the tech has been asked to make a recording of the sound for diagnosis. I will certainly report the outcome when available.

I have this issue as well, if we can get a recording it can be submitted to Toyota via DPR (Dealer Product Report) and hopefully get a TSB to correct this issue.

    Thanks for the replies!
I think I will call the dealership on Monday and get some 'clearification'.
I'll ask the reason, and cost.
    It should be interesting.
The service would be done during a time that I am getting a free tire rotation.
So the rims would already be off, and the brakes exposed.

I think they will explain, "You live in Wisconsin with high road salt usage. That is why we suggest this be done regularly."

I would be interested in hearing an opinion from some of you that live in salt infested states like Wisconsin.

This lubrication helps facilitate the smooth slide of money from your wallet to the dealer's bank account.

This is something that you would do if you were servicing the brakes, but not normally a maintenance item. At 15k, it is just a way for the dealer to get more of your money.

    OK, here it is ....
I just spoke with the Assistant Service Manager, Joshua, at Lakeland Toyota in Sheboygan, Wisconsin.

CDM front caliper service due next time

Reason? .... "to keep things lubricated and free moving.
It should be taken apart and lubricated and put back together.
This should be done about every 15,000 miles."

Where does this info come from, and why don't I see it in the book? ...."
It's straight from Toyota, and you don't see all needed maintenance listed in the book."

How much to do it? .... "$50"

Save the money... That's my opinion. You just have a stealership doing the maintenance.

If you were driving a 4X4 that spent every weekend buried in mud and water it might be a good idea. I believe a Prius driven in a normal manner will go the entire life of the brake pads without this service. If you live in an area where they use a lot of salt on the roads maybe it wouldn't hurt to do it every spring.

If you have doubts go to a couple of other Toyota dealers in your area and ask them, I would also call Toyota and ask them if this needs to be done and if so why isn't it in the maintenance schedule.

Now that is a good idea!
I have the numbers for 3 Toyota dealerships in other near cities.
I will call them to see what they say about needing this service.

I'd call Toyota as you suggest, but I have no clue what number I would be using to talk to the right person.

    ----

I am starting to think I have a bone to pick with this dealership.
I've had the oil overfilled both times I have had my 'free oil change'.
Even when I gave them written instructions on how much oil to use.

They mention on the service report that they used, "customer supplied oil".
But there is no mention of 0W20 synthetic.
So now if I have engine problems, my records show I went 10,000 miles between oil changes with no proof of using synthetic.
The toyotaownersonline.com site shows the same info.
I am going to have to talk to them about getting an entry placed in there to cover my butt.

They DID show the fact that I requested 42 psi front and 40 psi rear for tire pressure after rotation.
Got their butts covered, and left mine hanging out .....

When I have had issues with what the dealer has reported with their records posted to toyotaownersonline (such as mis-reporting the mileage at the time of service), I have simply posted an immediate follow-up record of my own to clarify the work done and correct any missing or wrong information. From what I have heard, getting the dealer to revise or provide additional detail on a maintenance record can be difficult in many cases. My advice is to save yourself the trouble and make a separate post as an owner. That way there will be a permanent and dated record of what exactly occured.

It's time to find another dealer. You caught them with their hand in the cookie jar this time, why give them another chance to rip you off?

You just get who you get, they may not help but they are polite. I have called them a couple of times lately about a problem with their web site and didn't have to wait but a minute or so to get a human. They didn't fix the problem but they were very nice about not doing anything.

I just spoke with 2 of the 3 places I was going to call.
They both sang the same tune.
"suggested maintenance by Toyota", and the second guy mentioned "corrosion states".
They both mentioned the "every 15,000 miles" .....

I guess that means that they want me to give them $50 every 15,000 miles.

This must be something new, because I haven't heard replies in this thread about other Prius owners having this done every 15K.
Have their been 'issues' with the Prius front calipers?

I thought there were a couple of dealerships that read and reply at this forum.
Any thoughts or knowledge about this service item?

Not unless it's a service to eliminate the clattering noise that (might) be coming from the front calipers. Still waiting to hear from my friend about that.
