I am thinking of getting a shark fin for my 2010 Prius. Will this hurt the XM radio or the Navigation? I am not sure where the XM or nav antenna is. Thanks!
No, the XM and nav antenna do not rely on length. It will affect FM reception. It will make it even crappier than it was, but not by very much. I don't think it is even measurable.
there are no OEM shark fin antennas for the prius. So any place you go to buying the antenna is at your own risk. It will NOT improve FM reception. It will probably make it worse. XM/NAV remain the same, because the satellite signal is not so easily affected like FM/AM radios are.
I wouldn't bet a lot of money on it, but I think it is in the base of the whip antenna, which stays on the car under the shark fin, which is supposedly transparent for the most part. The only part you remove is the whip part and then you glue the fin over it. It is pretty neat.
My Shark Fin antenna appears to be OEM, right down to the color. It is much nicer looking, IMHO, than stock. Comparing stock versus Shark Fin sound-quality by listening to all of the available bands, including AM, I was unable to discern the difference. Perhaps I live in an area where terrestrial radio signals are stronger than where others live. Marshal
It is supposed to appear OEM, but it isn't. The shark fins I have seen for Toyota's are made by Visual Garage. They have good support and they match all factory colors, but it is not OEM. I bought the fin from this site but I managed to screw up the adhesive gasket and I called Visual Garage. I got the number from the website: VG Shark Fin Antenna - Home and they sent me another gasket, no questions asked, even though I told them I got it from the PriusChat store. The reason I ended up calling them was that my email to the store went unanswered. In defense that was when they were working really hard at getting the mud flaps from Europe so they were kind of busy at the Prius Chat shop. Logic tells me that the reception for FM is lessened, but I couldn't tell a difference. Nothing else seemed to change.
....and your point is? BTW: the word 'appears' means "having the appearance of" something, ie: looking similar or the same as the object in question.
What part do you not understand? It is supposed to "appear" to be "Original Equipment Manufacturer" which means that it is supposed to look like something that is made to be purchased by Toyota to be sold along with the car. It is not. It is made by someone to be bought by the ultimate consumer. PS I already knew the definition of "appears" but thanks. I will type real slow for you. Concentrate now...the shark fin is supposed to look like the rest of the car. That is, like a piece of the car that was supplied by the manufacturer. BUT, guess what?...it isn't supplied by the manufacturer, it is bought and put on by people like me who have nothing better to do with their money. Got it?
