Prius stalling

    Do you still do this? I am looking for a pedal assembly for my 2001 Prius, I think... I just bought the Prius, it has 109000 miles on it and the check engine light came on. I took it to the dealer and they said
    "PERFORMED DIAGNOSTIC TEST, RETRIEVED CODES: P0171 LEAN CODE, P1120 ACCELERATOR SENSOR, ALSO C1212, C1259 >> NEED MORE DIAGNOSTIC TIME TO NARROW DOWN WHICH ONE. MORE THAN LIKELY HAVE TO REPLACE ACCELERATOR FIRST, ($500.00 PART), THEN GO FROM THERE. BAD ACCELERATOR MAY BE TRIPPING OTHER CODES OR THERE COULD BE MORE THEN 1 ISSUE."

    Any suggestions?

    Folks, need advise on a recent, now recurred problem. The check engine light comes on; shortly after, the car stalls, and I've been able to coast to a safe spot and have it towed to a dealership. (I just joined priuschat--apologies if I'm not following any convention I ought to be...) Here are timelines:
    Friday Aug 6th : 75K service, accelarator pedal recall. (Note that the car has never had any problems before this.)
    Sunday Aug 8th : Was driving when check engine light came on; pulled over, stopped and restarted car; check engine light still on. Attempted to drive home, car stalled, unable to accelerate, problem lights came on. Could not go beyond 5mph. Coasted into a parking lot, AAA towed car to dealership (the one closer to home; not the one the car hsa always known, and which did the 75K/recall service).
    Tuesday Aug 10th: Auxillary battery changed (+ labor: ~$500); after battery replacement, "codes P0121/P0123 still present". A wire component of the hybrid system was ordered and installed. I drove it away Wednesday Aug 11th.
    Friday Aug 20th: I was driving ~50mph with my 4 year old daughter when the exact same problem occurred. Coasted to a safe spot, had car towed to same dealership.
    Sunday Aug 22nd: Many error codes, likely to be problem with the throttle. Part costs $900. Labor is of course more. Not under extended warranty. I told them not to do a thing until tomorrow, Monday, when various managers are onsite. I would them to trouleshoot on their own dime, and identify the problem conclusively. When we are sure of the problem, I will pay for it if out of warranty.
    Your thoughts?

    Can you please post the rest of your error codes? As for "accelerator pedal recall", the 2nd gen never was included in that other than for sawing off part of the pedal and replacing some factory floor mats.

    $500 to change the 12 V battery sounds really high. May we ask what dealer this is? (I bought and gotten my car serviced at Toyota Sunnyvale and was satisfied w/them.)

    Sure, here's everything from the invoice. Thanks for taking a look. You are right: this was for sawing off part of the pedal. Yes, same dealership.

    To clarify on cost for aux battery:
    $130 for check and advise
    $194.18 for parts
    $130 for labor

    A. Previous tech pulled codes P0121/P0123/P0300 (Raji's note: last cd be typo for P3000). I checked for TSBS and found TSB for code P3000. When I checked the codes I only found P0121/P0123/C1241/C2310 and no P3000. Tested battery and auxilliary battery failed after charging. Need to replace battery and recheck. After battery replacement codes P0121/P0123 still present. Tested T body and connectors as per inspections and found connector not fully seated. Reconnected and rechecked. OK. If problem comes back (Raji's note: !!!) it may need more diagnosis.
    B. Customer states replace auc bettery as per diagnosis. Performed battery test and failed test. Replaced aux battery. Rechecked. Codes P3000 and P0123 came back on. Ordered part for TSB.
    C. Warranty add on, during diagnosis discovered DTC P3000 stored, check and advise.
    After battery replacemnt found code P3000 and found TSB EG023-04. Performed checks and found it falls under TSB. Replaces wire harness as per TSB abd rechecked. OK at this time.

    1. You should not have had to pay for the floor wire harness replacement, as that is covered by the hybrid system warranty (10 years, 150K miles if your car was originally sold in CA.)

    2. You should not have to pay for any repairs associated with the accelerator pedal, since it is clear that the dealership tech who cut off the pedal bottom screwed things up, failed to properly reconnect the wiring harness connector, who knows what else.

    3. Since you asked the dealer to replace the 12V auxiliary battery, you need to pay for that, but the job will take the dealer tech around 15 minutes. MSRP of the battery is $139. I recommend you ask the service writer how s/he can justify charging you $260 to check the battery and replace it. Also, how can s/he justify a price for the battery that is 50% above MSRP. Both practices are outrageous and an incredible rip-off.

    Latest update further down, but answers to the points you raised first.

    Patrick, you are right I did not pay for the hybrid wire--it was under warranty. Both the dealership that did the accelarator pedal work and the one that's worked one it since the stall say with great certainty that the two are completely unrelated....I asked about the cost of the aux battery, and was asked for a source for the MSRP cost...they said those came from Japan...

    Today's update: I was told that the error codes coming up are P0123 (throttle pedal position sensor high input..) and P0121 (throttle pedal position sensor switch circuit), that these are inside the throttle body. These codes also came up last time when the engine stalled. Total cost including labor is $1223. :( Brutal.

    Basically, I would like confidence that the part they are replacing is bad--I suppose I could ask for it and make a candle holder with it.

    I don't think there's much I can do other than pay the $1223. Is there?? Perhaps this is consistent with what they said on the last invoice "Tested T body and connectors as per inspections and found connector not fully seated. Reconnected and rechecked. OK. If problem comes back it may need more diagnosis."?

    The 12V auxiliary battery does come from Japan, and that is the reason why it is as expensive as it is. The part number is 28800-21170 and the MSRP is $138.70.

    Since MSRP is $138.70, I assume that dealer cost is 50% of that number or less. That's why I think it is ridiculous if your dealer is trying to charge you $194 for that battery.

    What are you getting for $1,223? Are they replacing the throttle body assembly? MSRP of the throttle body, part number 22030-21020, is $875.

    Looks like you are being charged for 3 hours of labor time as well, which seems high.

    Your alternatives to this repair would include checking to see whether Luscious Garage in SF or Art's Automotive in Berkeley can offer you a less expensive repair, and to also check other dealerships in the vicinity.

    In retrospect I agree that the work done to the accelerator pedal would not relate to the throttle body assembly failure. Nevertheless the timing of the events is a bit suspicious.

    Great info, Patrick, many thanks. After checking out the link you provided, I called the parts dept of my original dealer (Toyota 101, Redwood City where I picked up my Prius back in December 2003--wonderful folk) who said their price for the 12V battery is $144. So I called these guys back, cited the various sources and asked for my $50 back. Apparently I will get a price adjustment on the current job. So thanks a ton!! Needless to say, I asked for the part number of the to-be-installed components. One is exactly the one you mentioned: 22030-21020, for which they too quote me $875. Also a gasket, 22271-21030 for $6.73. Labor runs $130/hr here....sheesh. I will look into the hours required as well.

    I've already ok'ed the work here...will keep the other places in mind, but given the sophistication of the car's systems along with constraints related to my schedule etc., am more comfortable at the moment with the dealers. This might change as this experience plays out, upon which I may have a chat with Toyota's Customer Experience Center, as Bob64 suggested.

    Agree with you that the timing is suspicious. Am now in a loaner 2010 white Prius. Looks more like a spaceship inside than my trusty steed, but nevertheless is overall quite impressive. Will get mine back Friday, most likely.

    My 07 at speeds over 65mph …suddenly starts blowing black smoke out tail pipe, mpg drops to 18mpg, stops charging hv battery and finally comes to a stop when battery is depleted. Powering the car off for a few minutes allows the car to restart and run normally…I do need to wait a few minutes for hv battery to charge up… then car drives fine the rest of the trip. Throws codes p2195
    Very dangerous event… anyone experience this?

    Well, P2195 is the upstream Air Fuel sensor stuck lean (too little fuel). Your symptoms sound like the engine is very rich (too much fuel).

    My guess is that the upstream Air Fuel sensor is failing under heavy use. I would replace it with a genuine Toyota or Dendo part from a reputable source.
