So I just got a new 2010 II prius last monday, and I have some interesting results. For the first 300ish miles, I was only getting around 43MPG, not bad but nothing great either (this was mostly local driving). However, once i took my prius on the highway for the first time it really seemed to break the car in, as I ended up getting 566 miles on the first full tank, and a computer est. of 51 MPG. I never changed the AC settings (auto 73degrees with around 80-90 degree external temp). Either my car really broke in during that trip on the highway, or maybe im just getting more used to prius driving, but overall I couldn't be happier! I'm hoping that my next tank will be even better.
We purchased our prius in May 2009, and we left for Reno Nevada from Seaside Oregon, mostly highway of course and got over 50 MPG calculated. In good weather on the highway 50 MPG is pretty easy with the Prius, even for a brand new car. Check your tire inflation, sometimes it is lower than recommended. I keep mine at 44 PSI max sidewall pressure for all 4 tires. I just rotated them and they are wearing beautifully and I will easily get 60,000 miles out of these tires.(Michelin Energy Saver, 195X65X15) Proper tire inflation will give you at least a 1-2 MPG increase. alfon
It likely has more to do with a reduction in short trip "local driving" and actually driving for a sustained amount of time with little to no stopping and starting or additional warmup cycles.
i'm getting an average of 50mpg, we live in cen pa and have lots of up and down driving. on a trip to s. jersey i got 60mpg. couldn't be happier with mileage
Picked mine up on Saturday. So far I'm getting 47 mpg around town. Couldn't be happier to date for local short trips.
Same here, picked it up a week ago Saturday, display says 48 mpg and I'm still just over a 1/2 tank full.
I'm quoting F8L's comment just for emphasis. His answer is correct: short trips and city driving will produce lower mileage. Tom
I have two tanks through my Prius. First tank was 51 and the second was 52.(All driving in Power Mode) Quite happy with the mileage.
