I think most have been a bit harsh on the OP. He was asking politely if there are anyone who can help to turn the crap Satnav off completely but instead he gets critisim.

    Shame.

First of all, why do you need to have the CD in the Satnav? I don't have a CD for the satnav? I have a CD of music thats it and when my Satnav is turned off (screen off) there is no other sound other than my rattles and squeeks).

Like a few have said, taking it in to the dealer won't solve your problem because Toyota are not going to bother themselves with this. They don't even bother with the entire radio not working.

If it really bothers you that much you can change your car like what I am about to do in a weeks time.

In the NAR, the Satnav is DVD-based, as opposed the HD-based units found in the European/UK regions.

I see. I already hate the Satnav. IF it was DVD based I think I will hate it even more. Actually I don't think I will buy it in the first place then.

Not having the nav screen shown and turn off nav system is, IMHO, two different things. In my Gen 3 Prius, the Nav system is on and running EVEN when the Nav screen is not shown which means I do not want to use the NAV.
I want a switch or something can turn the NAV off, but apparently, such thing does not exist for Prius.

    Jzhou,

I have a 2005 GX470 same brand/type of NAV as my Prius Gen III IV 2010 and I've never heard the DVD noise in either vehicle moving or parked in a garage. If the primary reason for turning off the NAV is because:

    1. Premature wear/tear on the NAV system - don't worry after five years of heavy use on my GX470 not an issue
    2. Noise - Then you should bring it to the dealer because it's not suppose to make a noise. SUGGESTION: I would ask your sales rep to try out a STOCK car on the lot that has the DVD so you can see if it too makes the same sound. At that time you can determine if this is a unique issue to your car only or if EVERY Prus suffers from this and if so dealer will not be able to address this issue for you...

    Either way good luck!

The disc reading noise is fairly soft though... I only heard it when I had the radio and climate control off while stopped on an empty country road. I also don't remember it going continuously as I was stopped.

    It comes down to this:

Its a machine, and more specifically a machine built to a certain price and economy. They didn't go through and make sure everything makes the minimum amount of noise, or an elegant noise, the way they do on a Lexus. Take my ES350...you think thats quiet and refined until you drive an LS460. Mine is built to a price that the LS is not built to, and the LS is of course, quieter and more refined.

Machines make noise, the air conditioning makes noise, the buttons make noise when pressed, the engine makes noise. Computers make noise...DVD players make noise. The navigation system...makes noise. The system runs in all modes because its meant to be on demand, when you're in the audio screen its still operating, still tracking your location, still running your route so when you click back, its instantly available. If it shut off whenever you moved to another screen it would have to reboot whenever you looked back...which would be obnoxious.

Your option is to install some sort of switch, which is going to void the warranty. 99.9% of owners have no desire to deactivate the nav, so why would Toyota engineer and build in a switch? No car I have ever seen has such a switch.

I had the same issue. Went to the dealer, and they said they blew some dust out. Didn't fix it. Went to the lot and sat in some Prius' with Nav, and listened to the nice quiet navigation system. got back in mine and listened to the dvd searching like a squirrel. Went back to the dealer, they agreed, defective. Ordered the dvd drive. 1 month and still no part. Dealer says it's probably a supplier issue. Man, pay all that money for the Nav/solar, and I'm annoyed with the thing after one month. Too bad, as I traded my 2010 III, up for the IV, to get the Nav, and it doesn't work. Figures. I posted about this on the tech section. I"ll follow up there, if I ever get it fixed. Meanwhile, the first thing I do is open it up and pull the dvd out so I don't have to feel like I'm defragmenting a hard drive with my Prius.

I've got my first Prius on order and decided to see what support forums exist and came across "PriusChat" but some of you guys are brutal to other members.

I didn't get a IV because I didn't what to pay $1500 for a DVD based Nav system but if I had I'd be very concerned about a system that made that much noise too! As a retired electronic engineer in the computer industry I know those symptoms are not normal.

Ignore the naysayers and Toyota worshipers. This is a real problem. Check out this thread:
