    Greetings Prius Enthusiasts,

I've searched and have been unable to find an answer. My question:

Is there a way to remove the entire center compartment? I'm referring to the whole thing -- center armrest, center storage compartment, "secret drawer", front and back cup holders, and anything else that's part of this assembly. Any help or links would be much appreciated. Thanks.

    Sure, it's 4 screws.

    Here's what I did:
    1. Grab the front drawer and pull up; the whole front part (secret drawer and folding cup holders) pops off
    2. Look down beside the where you pulled up the drawer, there will be two screws; one on each side
    3. Use a phillips head (x-head) screwdriver to remove them (there were obstructed by the drawer/cup holders)
    4. Open the main compartment and remove the felt bottom; it's not glued down or anything
    5. Use a wrench to remove the bottom two bolts
    6. lift the centre-piece out; unplug the wires since they power the VPA plug
    7. done.
The whole thing should only take you 10 minutes... 30 if you don't have the right socket size for those two middle bolts. :D

I ran some cable under the carpet on my Prius for my DICE iPod hookup just last week and had to remove the centre-piece to drill a hole into the bottom of it to run the iPod hookup into that main compartment.

Thanks, Snookums. The only thing remaining are the wire connections to the Aux and power outlets inside the compartment. Did you disconnect those as well?

Great info. I am installing an iphone cradle and was looking to get to the aux in the console from the underside vs via taking apart the dash.

Oops, forgot to mention the wires. I also (it seems) forgot to plug mine back in when I put the thing back together! :p

Also a small addendum; the two screws on the front which need to be removed are in fact obstructed by the drawer/cup holders piece.

Update: Just a word of caution for those who might try this.

I removed the center console entirely, including disconnecting the wires which I thought were only for the Aux and Power outlets inside the center compartment. However, it appears there is also a smart key sensor inside this compartment which allows "smart start" (starting the vehicle with the fob in your pocket/purse). After removing the compartment from the vehicle, I am now unable to start the car unless I insert the fob into the slot (2006 Prius). All the other smart key functions work.

While I didn't disconnect anything just to get to the aux and power ports, I don't see anything in the wiring that indicates any smart receiver in the console. Page 51 of the wiring diagram. Only power port and aux port.

Maybe you bumped the S12 smart key cancel switch under the steering wheel? (also shown on p51). I did that in taking apart the dash and freeked when the FOB didn't work. As well my FOB doesn't work if I set it on the seat or in the back or set in on top of the center console. Only if I have it somewhat near the FOB slot like in the cup holder or in a pocket more front of the seat. Mine fell out of my pocket and was resting between the seat and console and couldn't Ready the car. With that I'm thinking there is not a receiver or hookup in the center console (no indication of it at least unless someone sees it where I don't).

krg03, thanks for the links. On the wiring diagram you supplied, p.51 shows the room oscillator (R8) as part of the compartment. Since I've disconnected this, I believe this is why "smart start" isn't working.

    Thanks guys!

This thread is exactly what I was looking for too. I've installed the coastal e tech audio video input, and I want to install a mediagate video player in the center console, but i'd like to run the wires under the center console to come out the bottom.

I see you are correct. I didn't "see" it but the diagrams are clear. Good find. I just disconnected and reconnected everything. I have to reexamine mine again to make sure because my fob doesn't always work in my pocket to "ready" even though I've changed the fob battery. I believe though it's always been this way (even before my mod).

This is a good place for a video player although not very handy if you are going to have displays in the back. Kids keep wanting to change the DVD and the way the console flips up is not easy to get to from the back. Keeps it dust free though. There is area unused in the console under it. I did a mod also and tied in another poweroutlet for the back. Flip down the cup holder and put a power outlet. I also put interior night led running lights on the sides of the console while I had it out. While I had it in the house I "upgraded" the top pad to have more padding and another type of top. Comes off with 4 screws and tuck/glue your top over the current pad. There is room for another small battery and switch here too as a "jump" battery. I've used it twice. Tied the battery (diode protected from discharge) into the power port (always active port mod first). Any wires easily go from the console under the carpet to the center pull off panel on the floor under the radio. Now its consoleishous

Glad I found this. I wanted to remove the center armrest console in order to swap my aux input for a new one. The old one broke. Has anyone done that after removing the armrest?

Update: I removed the center armrest console as per the instructions above...good instructions BTW. It took me a minute to figure out how to un-clip the wire assemblies. I successfully located the adapter assembly stereo jack, and after taking it out and opening it up, I concluded that the part is actually very self contained and any further repair of it was beyond my expertise. So I called Toyota of Manhattan to get the part and it was going to cost $104. After I guffawed at how something like that (I mean it's so small it can fit in the palm of my hand) could cost so much, they offered to drop it down to $84. I said thank you and I might call back. I looked online and found the part on Toyota Parts Overstock for $78. Needless to say, it's too expensive. I might find a wreck and see if I can salvage the part from there...
