Per the pictures below-- do you guys get exit names on your screen or exit just numbers? I seem to get about 1 in 20 names, and it's inconsistent as to their frequency... Is this normal? The guys at the dealership said it is operating right, I don't believe them-- I mean, why would it function differently at different times if it were working correctly all the time?

Upon further review, I'm not being picky-- it's here in the manual, "[3] Exit number and junction name" are displayed (see attached)...

It's not exit number "OR" name, it's AND.

So, anyone else getting this error?

But, even the picture on the manual only shows the name, not the exit number and name. So, it may be an error in the manual, which probably should read: Exit number "or" junction name. It probably happened when they trannslated the manual from Japanese to English...

A friends new high end Garmin handheld has the same problem. It's kind of annoying since California was late to the party on numbering exits and some exits still don't have number signs, just names.

A fair point, thanks for that. Still, is it too much to expect a nav system to tell me what streets are coming up? Moreover, I'd still like to know if my nav system performance is typical. Thanks!

Agreed. The nav should be able to display street names as a preset.
The numbers are annoying to me. Not wild about the nav compared to my Garmin.

Interesting. I'm also in LA... I'll give it a shot and let you know... maybe it's an LA thing...

There are very few navigation companies, one of which is NavTEQ and I Toyota uses their data. As does Mercedes, Chrystler, Honda, Microsoft, Yahoo, MapQuest, Garmin, Magellen, and so on and so on. It is like 90% market share. The data collected by them is updated every few years, and then the nav data in the respective devices is updated. If the main database doesnt have the name, then it will not have a name. It is not a Toyota thing.

If you want to make changes that the NavTEQ survey car missed, or get it checked before the next scheduled pass, then you can report the error/lack of info to them: NAVTEQ Map Reporter

In 1 to 4 years time, it will be fixed. Nothing Toyota can do about it. NavTEQ even controls the database that Sirius/XM pull their traffic data from. They are like the google of maps, excluding google maps! :)

Nope. As the previous poster pointed out, it depends on what's in the database on the DVD. There is nothing Toyota or JBL can do about it. Replacing the Nav Unit was ridiculous -- the dealer obviously didn't understand how the technology works.

Does JBL make the Nav system in the Gen III Prius? Denso makes the Gen II unit.

Actually, I'm not sure about who actually makes the Nav system. The audio system (which shares the same display) is made by JBL in the Gen III.

Likewise in the Gen II. JBL makes the upgraded audio system, but Denso makes the Nav unit. Navteq supplies the data for the Nav.

Same result as you.. 10 freeway eastbound at La Brea or so. Only exit numbers... great, now you made me aware of this and I'll always be complaining about it in my mind...hah.

I've got the Denso Navteq combo in my Corvette. It sucks too.

Oh man, I'm actually really sorry I brought that to your attention-- it totally drives me nuts. I guess there's nothing to do about it, but I can't help but feel that Toyota has totally dropped the ball on this one; I mean, my cell phone is sooo much better at being a Nav unit than this POS.

Thanks for looking into it though.

On the good side, voice recognition works really well on the Prius...at least for me.

So have you contacted the Nav company with updated data?

That's just it-- there's no data missing-- one day the system will display an exit name, the next day it won't. I think the system is just underpowered or something. It's super annoying.

It depends on the mapping data and how much Toyota wants to pay for features (more POIs or better detailed maps?).

e.g. Two TomTom units have the same "TeleAtlas" map but one will be more detailed and have more POIs because you paid more for the unit and it has more memory than the lower priced one. They're both based on the same map.
