looks a bit high, i would get prices from a few dealers and see how they compare. you can also go to AAA.com for pricing and purchasing help. most importantly, don't be in a rush! all the best!
^^ meh my doc fee was $350. to the OP: you could do with $1000 under invoice. Trust me, the dealer will still make loads of money off it. Be adamant about it, they want you more than you want the car. Look on Truecar.com as well to get a perspective of what other people have paid.
doc fees are pure dealer profit...allowing them charge such ridiculous amounts for them means they keep doing it.
Sarlacc, you think think it would be possible for me to get the dealer to way the doc fee? i went to two dealers already and had a terrible experience. I went to Lee's Toyota in queens, ny and he was trying to sell me the prius that was in his lot only. when i mention that i wanted the IV with solar with black. he was like you know that if you get solar package with IV they remove the leather. I didn't bother questioning him. they didn't have a prius test vehicle and the one in the showroom had no charge. it was just a terrible experience.
Read through www.carbuyingtips.com. One should have a better experience dealing with the Internet Sales Dept compared to the salesforce on the floor. Don't let the idiots discourage you. In NYC the AAA price for a 4 Solar with mats is $28872, MSRP is $31830 & invoice is $29722. That dealer is 15.1 miles from 10020. Know what you want & stick to it. IMO the PIO (Port Installed Options) are crap. If the car has stuff on it that you don't want walk away or have them remove it. You may also want to shop in Jersey to leverage your position. Watch the legal fees & taxes which are often enough overstated. Does NY DMV really charge $299 for a title & registration? You probably won't get the BS fees down but you may be able to get the car's price down. It's a buyer's market. Use it to your advantage. Good luck.
I just bought my first new car and I was nervous like you! I emailed the internet department of a bunch of local dealerships (through a website) and asked for their best offer. I made it clear that I was looking at multiple dealerships and willing to drive out of the way but because of that not to waste my time with high offers. I quickly narrowed it down and within about 2 days and a handful of emails had everything worked out. Now it took forever at the dealership but they didn't really try and play games with the price of the car since I had documentation. They manager was even getting a little irritated that I kept saying no to everything extra they offered. At the end of the day I got a car I love for a great price so I highly advise doing your research and emailing a bunch of dealerships.
^^ i tried the internet department method, but one internet fleet manager i talked to was full of crap and showed me a bunch of numbers he expected me to believe. I was better off walking in, dealing with the salesman, getting him desperate, negotiating with his boss, leaving, letting him call me 3 hours later, negotiating over the phone a little more, and then settling on a price i didn't even know was possible =) $21650 + TTTL =) for a Prius II
After you make a deal I would simply say I'm not paying any BS document fees so dont add them. If I see them in the contract I'll walk...and be prepared to do it. You should NEVER spend more than 30 minutes at a dealer trying to make a deal...after that its games. Be prepared to get up and leave. I did my researching on price before trying to deal, part of that was finding this forum and asking questions. This lead to me to Dianne who works are a dealer near me. I called her and she said I wouldnt do any better than the deals she had listed. I went to another dealer, they wouldnt touch the deal. I was out in less than 10 minutes. I went and told them its a yes or no answer, I wont play games. Then, I went back to the dealer where I originally test drove the car. And I had friend who had bought 4 cars from the same dealer accompany me. They remembered him, and I again said I dont want to play games, here is the deal, can you do it. I worked directly with the fleet manager and he worked the numbers, we went back and forth for about 10 minutes working things out and I was given the deal I was happy with....which was better than deal I was told "no one would beat." The power in your hands, your the buyer. Sales are slow because of the recession and toyota's other known problems. Its just a question of can you find a dealer who wants to move units, or a dealer who just HAS to make some kind of profit on every car sold. But again...do NOT spend anymore than 30 minutes dicking around with dealers and numbers....usually even 30 minutes is too long. If you go in educated and prepared, you can strike a deal in very little time...or you move on to the next dealer. Dont play their games.
problem is...in Houston all the dealers want to talk to you on the phone!! I tell them them to keep in email until we are close in price, then never hear from them again
