Hey guys, I have researched some older posts on this topic, yet didn't come across any that would answer the question I have. I have an 08 model, has the map and voice activation buttons on the steering wheel, but doesn't have the Nav package. How difficult would it be to swap in a Nav screen from a doner Prius? I use my Garmin, but on the days which I make 20-25 sales calls in the not-so-nice areas, I would like a break from taking the Garmin on and off the widnshield and hiding it at every stop. Any thoughts or input would be appreciated.
Your model never had NAV, so a swap won't do anything. About 06 or 07, Toyota started putting all of the buttons on the steering wheel if the car has bluetooth. There are a lot more components to add other than the MFD, so the cost won't be worth it. Stick with the Garmin, it's better anyway.
Actually if your car has JBL and Bluetooth adding factory Nav is not hard at all. You will need 3 major components and it would be VERY helpful if you could get the connectors from the donor car also. You will need: 1) A nav equipped MFD (make sure to get one from an 06-09) 2) The nav ECU that is under the drivers seat (same as the MDF, be sure to get one from an 06-09) 3) The nav antenna that is mounted to the underside of the middle of the dash. Alternately you can get an aftermarket antenna from ebay. There are about a dozen wires that connect to the Nav ecu and most of those go from the Nav ecu to the MFD. The power connections to the Nav ecu can be tapped from the JBL amp that is under the passenger seat. The antenna can be located just about anywhere in the car if you don't want to take the dash top off to mount it to the bracket location.
Thanks Jello, this certainly seems doable. I will start hunting for the pieces, and will post results and pictures as I go along.
