Today I brought home my new 2007 Prius. Until now, I've been keeping my keys on a strong magnet on the refrigerator door. It works nicely for me. Will the magnet interfere with or damage the smart key?
i have a big ol' honkin' magnet paperweight that i throw my keys on when i get to the office. no trouble with the keys but once, when i went to grab them, the magnet came with them and landed on my big toe. on the way to the emergency room... well, that's a bit off topic, sorry!
As has been mentioned: a magnet, no problem (except for falling object injuries ). However: As stated in the owner's manual (and backed up by numerous posters), be sure to keep it separated from your cell phone.
I don't remember seeing such in the manual and when I posted and asked about smart keys and cell phones the general consensus I got was that there is no worry of interference. In fact my key has been a few inches from the cell phone for over a year now and both the key and cell phone still work fine.
I may have "misspoke". hwell: From my understanding, if the smart key fob and cell phone are in the same pocket/purse, the phone will cause the fob to essentially stay active and drain the fob's battery. I don't have a cellphone, but IIRC, several people have reported this problem.
The SKS fob listens on 134.2 KHz, and transmits on 315 MHz. In order to trigger a transmission, there would have to be something that mimics what the car sends out on 134.2 KHz.
