TSB EL002-05 Multi-Display Functions are Inoperative

Just re-upping the TSB as the original link seems inoperative.

Well I'll be, this just happened to mine today, but it is an 07 model! Same darned thing. I am seeing if I can get in touch with service and pass it on to hopefully speed things up.

 

Do you by chance have a DICE iPod or HD unit? If so, try disconnecting the power to the DICE unit, that may fix the problem. If it does, call DICE about a replacement unit with current firmware.

I just put a DICE in there about 5 weeks ago. It has been working fine. That would suck if the DIce is causing it since it is at the dealer right now.

 

Bill Merchant you saved me a trip to the dealer. I too have had a working DICE unit and today my screen started acting up. Just unplugged the DICE and everything works again. Looks like I have to send the DICE back again, but that's a cheaper alternative to MFD replacemnt. Thanks!

 

Bill, same with me; I installed the DICE, it worked fine for two weeks the the MFD started failing (sluggish, error messages, etc.) If it IS the DICE, why - and does the Silverline Co. know about it?

Also - where did this TSB go? Can't locate it... Thanks, Rick

I wish I had found this post before I tore apart the MFD looking for microscopic faults in the soldering. After seeing these posts I unplugged the connection at the DICE and symptoms went away. Plugged it back in, and still seems okay. I'll cross my fingers and hope this is the end of the MFD malfunction story for me.

How did you disconnect the DICE? Are there instructions on the web?

 

The DICE is an aftermarket device that plugs in to the back of the radio and lets you hook up an ipod and control through the car's touchscreen MFD. I just disconnected whatever was plugged in to the DICE unit, then restarted the car and everything seemed to work fine. Then I plugged the DICE back in, and things kept working fine, so that's the way I left it.

 

I have a 2004 Prius and at ~95,000 miles, I started experiencing the MFD defect described in the TSB. I'm now at 98K and finally went to a dealer that offers a free diagnosis with error lights and confirmed. At first they told me about the new replacement costing $4,500. I then told them that refurbished is ~$450 from what I read online. The Parts Manager did seem to do a good job of calling around and found the Fujitsu replacement, but at $859. I see that there are some more recent posts on this issue. Can anyone update me on the pricing of Fujitsu replacement? I don't have an iPod unit, but is there something else to try at this point?
I am outraged that Toyota or the dealers that had the cars (I bought mine used in March 2005) didn't reach out to owners to fix the problem while it was under warranty. This makes them look even worse due to all the recent problems with accelerator pedals and floor mats.

 

Another option is to get a replacement salvaged MFD from Steve at Plug In Hybrid Electric Vehicle PHEV. He repairs and tests them before shipping one to you for less than $400. If you are comfortable working with high tech electronics, it is also possible to do the repair yourself as I did on mine.

Jeff: Thank you for the information. Doing this kind of repair myself would be totally out of my skill set. Would one be able to bring this part to the dealer and have them put it in? ie what kind of guarantee is their on the part?

 

My MFD touch screen died a month ago. I was going to post here about it but never got around till now. The sypmptom was that it didn't respond to any touch input with one exception. If I pressed the Info button, then any icon I touch in the Info screen will bring upt the navigation map. Any other screen... any other icon.... no response.

Kinda odd. Worked until I got in the car to drive off one day and....

Dealer replaced it under warranty.

 

Your dealer may balk at installing the salvaged unit. It is a 30 minute job that can easily be done at a car stereo shop. Just print out the removal instructions that are at Plug In Hybrid Electric Vehicle PHEV and bring them to the shop. You will need to ship your old unit back to Steve so that he can refurbish it for the next customer. Steve does test the refurbished MFD (I bought a replacement radio/CD from Steve for my Prius and was very satisfied with his service) and will back it up if there is a problem. Many Prius owners have done this repair and there have not been follow-up problems, but there are no long term guarantees in life.

OK, I give up. What is a "DICE"?

I too am having problem with my MDF. Brought my 2004 into Toyota and they said, and I admitted, that I tried mounting my new PPS's suction cup onto the screen, and thus it is not covered under my extended warranty.

Toyota dealer said its replacement would cost, I forget since it was so unbelievably expensive, either $3000 or $7000!!

Did you ever get instructions on how to disconnect the DICE? Please do not forget to tell me what the DICE is, in case I too have one.
