Do you ever experience guilt feelings about buying and driving a Prius, especially when your fellow motorists are paying $30 to $60 to top off their gas tanks at the pumps?

I feel nothing but pride in my 54 MPG over the last 2000 miles.

    Check out my bumper sticker.

There's not one ounce of guilt I have with my Prius. It's probably the best investment I've made next to my iPod. I've had the car for 4 days now and can't get enough of it. Impressed is a gross understatement.

Anyway, I really think it's kind of ironic how my car came in just when the gas prices really started to rise. It's too bad that others are out there suffering with frequent visits to the pump but hopefully they'll see why gas guzzlers aren't necessary.

Guilt? Har Har Hardy Har Har!

The last time I filled up I tried to bet the pump jockey (no self serve here) that I'd take half the gas and go twice as far as the Yukon (Puke-on?) at the next pump. Perhaps I could use a touch more humility, but guilt, that's a good one.

Thanks for the laugh, I needed it.

    hahahahaha.... no.

Well, I mean it's not like they had a choice if their vehicle was old. Some also need a particular vehicle. So, no only to those who whine and complain that their expensive full size SUVs or pickups are expensive to refuel. I mean, you don't hear sports car drivers complaining. That's because they know fun and excitement will come with a high fuel expense. Those who own the full size SUVs don't seem to think that way. Odd.

I boast more than I feel guilt. My co-workers have been complaining about how much gas they have put in their trucks recently and I was telling them how I filled my tank over 50 miles away on Sunday and still have a full tank. I am not making any friends...haha.

Oh yeah, I am new here. Owner of a 2005 Prius which I have had for about 2 months now.

I feel a little guilt from not buying a car built in the US. I know that we are in a world market now, however, I would have preferred to buy a "Made in USA" car, but the big 3 just don't get it yet. I'm still uncomfortable on 2 hr+ trips, but as the gas price goes up, my tolerance for pain increases. If I can get the seat to fit, I will be as nuts about hunk of steel, plastic and rubber as everyone else on this board is.

No guilt, but I'm feeling annoyance over this latest big jump in price hitting just before my annual 1,600 mile trip to the family reunion. Unlike my two other road trips this year, this one is on my tab. Good thing the reimbursement for that last trip shows up in this week's pay...

Why would one feel guilt? Smugness and pity, sure, but not guilt.

    Hi All,

The question posted is "Do I feel guilty about buying and driving a Prius..." and my answer is... Of course I do! Why, when I was shopping for my very first ever brand spanking new car I knew I had the opportunity to make a statement with the car that I chose.

I could have chosen a Kia Rio (because North Korea loves us so much and guaranteeing my survival during a five-mile per hour fender bender was never a priority); I could have chosen an F-350 (think of all those frequent flyer miles I just gave up that could have been mine by filling my 9 mile per gallon tank at least once every morning and every evening for my 194 mile daily round trip commute); I could even have chosen a Hummer (because driving a fake paramilitary vehicle on city streets, like this is some sort of active war zone and you might just need 5 foot tires and four wheel drive, with a ground clearance that barely exceeds the Prius, to safely clear that q-tip that is lying in your path is something every concerned american should be prepared for).

But did I? No! I ran out and found an elegant, intelligent, fuel efficient marvel of modern engineering to cart my behind around. I heedlessly turned my back on my chance to continue to add my support to the "Big 3" and to the oil companies that are currently producing record profits (hmm, I wonder how that could be happening...) by choosing to buy and drive a Prius.

And then, to compound my guilt, I had the audacity to add a rear window decal (in complementary silver of course) that says "Save A Soldier - Buy a HYBRID" when I could instead have had the entire back door of a Hummer to display my 35 yellow ribbon magnets while still having room for a couple of bumper stickers and the entire phone book printed out in 10pt font.

Of course I feel guilty. And I should. But then when you take into account that I was raised in a Catholic and Jewish household and you realize that I also feel responsible for the 1906 San Francisco earth quake, the stock market crash in 1929 and Linen's and Things going belly up my feeling guilty should not come as a surprise.

Take care all and embrace your guilt. After all, Martha Stewart did and to quote her "It's a very good thing".

Recently, I have started smiling and waving at people as they merge into traffic coming out of gas stations. Guilt, nah.

Widdletink: "Save a Soldier - Buy a HYBRID" That's awesome!!
Forever I've been racking my brain to come up with something that expressive and concise.

Tisza - you are a hoot! You should write stuff professionally or do stand-up.....and I love the bumper sticker!

seriously now....."feel guilty"?....aw hell no. I feel a lot of other things, but not guilty. I too was raised in a Catholic/Jewish household and was "trained" to feel guilty about everything. But not this time, ...and no more. I am a changed and new man with a Hybrid Car :D

The irony isn't lost on me - but as I've taken the initiative to limit the damage to the planet and be more forward thinking than the gas guzzlers the guilt doesn't come into it.

For me it's more like a serene sense of smugness and quiet anger at the blinkered selfishness of others who continue to emit tons of CO2 without a care.

No guilt whatsoever, but driving a Prius has given me a certain smug sense of vehicle superiority over the millions of lemmings that are using their full size SUVs to do solo-occupancy commuting. Everywhere I go, people are interested in my Prius. I think this car, and the recent fuel shortage problems we have experienced in the country may be the turning point for the masses to reconsider their foolish vehicle choices.

Tisza you read my mind! To those who "need" an SUV I say crackers! My birth family of EGHT traveled all over the country camping since the early 1950's in a STATION WAGON (remember those?). We traveled many dirt roads, mountain roads, steep roads , snowy roads and had experiences people can't even DREAM of in their SUV's. AND a station wagon didn't block the vision of those behind us thereby endangering their lives. No one NEEDS an SUV!!! I left GUILT behind back east 30 years ago. I FEEL GOOD I made the right decision for me. I wish others would attempt to make informed decisions instead of decisions based on (penis?) envy.
