Leather IS green . It's just not politically correct "veganism."

I am thrilled too! Thanks so much for the information. What are SKS and DRIVING lamps, are these not the headlights I'm assuming? Please keep everyone up to date on any new information. I assume there has been no news on possibly adding auto door locks, auto lights at night or power seat, etc? Again thanks so much! DANE :p BTW I think leather is a very nice addition; many people like it and those who don't can get the all the options it offers but without leather in the package below it. Let us know on prices as soon as you hear for sure!!!

Can't wait to see pictures of the 06'. I am picturing how the new lights and grille might look... :)

Sorry, I found out that SKS is Smart Key System, duh lol. But I am still wondering about DRIVING lamps and the other questions I had in the post. Also, the leather, do you think it will be the "fake" leather and regardless, how does leather hold up usually for Toyota? And, do you think the leather will also be partially on any of the following?: steering wheel, door trim and center armrest. THANKS SO MUCH!

SKS is short for Smart Key System as you'll see when you mouse over the word. It allows you to lock/unlock and start/stop the car without ever taking the key/fob out of your pocket/purse.

Driving lamps is another word for foglights/foglamps in the most general scope of things.

"textured grain" I can only assume is what's on the Camry right now or the Scion tC. In other words, soft-touch plastics with a textured grain look and feel.

Seeing that he said it was confirmed, I doubt power seats will make the cut.

I wonder if that leather will include the steering wheel?

Still no lighted turn signals. Bummer.

    And no retractable parking guides.

I want to have some of the geek stuff they get in Japan.

I'll wait and see what 2007 has to offer.

    Thanks for posting this!!! :guns:

I wonder what the prices will be. I wonder how much more they will charge for leather. Do you think it will go over 27k?

    Well, yeah.

The top package now is at $26,000.

The new top package is #7. That will probably be over $26,000 because it has more than the current top.

And beyond *that* is #8, which is basically #7 in leather. Yeah it's going to cost more than $27,000. I'm betting closer to $30,000. Like $29,995.

leather in a landfill is biodegradable
leather used in cars or other products (coats, wallets) are dyed with chemicals that harm the environment! "Then there's the fact that leather is" NOT BIODEGRADABLE after you dye it.

It sounds greenER to me to let it decompose in a landfill and put those nutrients back into the earth's natural cycle.

So, you think the production of the polyester used in those microfiber seat fabrics is greener? Dream on. Both China and India list their polyester production industries among their greatest polluters. And where do you think Toyota most likely gets their fabrics?

Here's an excerpt about polyester that I found on some random enviro-activist site. (They weren't too happy with leather either)

So sit back, relax, and feel good in your "green" polyester microfiber seats.

And by the way, calling the Prius a "Green" car is pretty ludicrous. It may be cleaner than an SUV, but it's still a polluter. And after all the pollution and waste created by manufacturing the metals, plastics, and rubbers in the car, it's down right amusing to see people bemoan the possibility of replacing 6 square yards of polyester microfiber with 6 square yards of leather.

If you really care about the environment, then you would be far better off to move closer to work and ride a bicycle or public transportation, rather than driving solo 40 miles to work in your own private smoke stack.

I've seen this TRAC term before, but I don't know what it means. I'm assuming it's an acronym of some sort, but can't seem to find a definition for it.

I would think that leather would be much more "green" than using synthetic fibers. Ever wonder about all the chemicals involved in making synthetic fibers?
However, leather products are made from what amounts to a recycled waste product. Cows are grown for food. While the flesh of the cow is turned into steaks and hamburgers, the skin of the cow is not eaten by people. So you have a choice, dump the skin into landfills, or produce durable goods out of the skin, such as leather seats, leather coats, leather wallets, etc.
    Sounds green to me.
Then there's the fact that leather is biodegradable, while synthetic fibers are not. (at least not as quickly as leather is)

You may also want to consider what goes into raising those cows. Environmental destruction is exacerbated by raising massive herds of cattle which then contribute to countless devastating earth destroying factors. Look into it, it's interesting. The ripple effect is huge with this one.

Then I'll start eating them even faster.

What I want to know is what does this have to do with the 2006 Prius? The 2005 had leather too, so it's not like this is really new.

    2005 Leather?

I don't believe the the 2005 was a factory-installed option. Perhaps after-market or dealer installed, but not factory installed.

Factory installed or not, if you go to Toyota.com right now, and build your Prius, you can specify cloth or leather in the interior part. I'm not sure who installs it, but it is an option.

    Wow - I didn't see that...hmmm...perhaps they're ramping up their 2006 web site changes?

    Good eye!

Edit: I just headed out and couldn't find this - I'm in the 44060 area code. Which area code are you specifying?
